History of Sant'Abbondio
Sant'Abbondio was first written about in the year 1192. Back then, it was known as Sancto Abundio.
In 1358, a document showed that several small settlements had grown around the church of SS Abbondio e Andrea. These places were Martignoni de Ronco, Ronco di Sopra, Scimiana, Calgiano, Caviano, and Scaiano. The church itself was first mentioned in 1364. It used to be part of the parish (a church district) of Vira. Later, it became the center of its own independent parish.
Over time, some of these villages separated from Sant'Abbondio. In 1774, Ronco de Martignoni, Ronco di Sopra, and Scimiana joined another parish. Then, in 1850, Caviano and Scaiano also left. The main church of the smaller Sant'Abbondio parish was rebuilt in 1852–53. It was designed in the classicist style, which means it used ideas from ancient Greek and Roman art.
For a long time, people in Sant'Abbondio mainly worked in farming and raising animals. In the 1800s, many people from the village moved to France to work as decorators, painters, and potters. This brought more money back to the village. In the second half of the 1900s, Sant'Abbondio became a popular place for tourists. Many vacation homes were built there.
