Magadino (called Magadign in the local language, Lombard) was once a town in the Ticino area of Switzerland. It was part of the Locarno district.

On April 25, 2010, Magadino joined with eight other towns to form a new, larger town called Gambarogno. These towns were Caviano, Contone, Gerra Gambarogno, Indemini, Piazzogna, San Nazzaro, Sant'Abbondio, and Vira Gambarogno.

History of Magadino

Luserte
Luserte in Quartino, a neighborhood in Magadino

Magadino was first mentioned in old writings in 1254. Back then, it was known as de Magadino. For a while, it was also called Megadin in German, but that name is not used anymore.

During the Middle Ages, the village was important. The Bishop of Como gave certain rights to the leaders of Locarno. These rights included collecting money from people passing through the area. This was like a toll fee. They collected these tolls until 1342.

The village of Quartino, a part of Magadino, had a Benedictine priory (a small monastery) from the 11th to the 16th century. This priory, dedicated to St. George, belonged to larger abbeys in Italy. Later, in the 1600s, the monastery's lands went to a hospital in Locarno.

Magadino, along with Quartino and Orgnana, was part of the church area of S. Pietro in Vira. But in 1846, Magadino became its own separate church area. The church of San Carlo, which you can still see today, was built between 1844 and 1846.

Old records from 1335 mention a tower in Magadino, but no one has ever found it. A story from the 1600s also talks about a castle built in 1365. It was ordered by Galeazzo Visconti for the people of Locarno. This castle was supposedly destroyed in 1518 by the Swiss.

Magadino as a Port Town

Magadino was once a very important port. It was a key stop for goods traveling from Lombardy (in Italy) north to the Alps. Its importance grew even more in 1515. This happened after a bridge over the Ticino river in Bellinzona collapsed.

In the 1800s, Magadino became even busier. Steamships started regular trips in 1826. Also, a new road over the Gotthard Pass opened in 1830. This made Magadino a popular stop for coaches and travelers. Many new warehouses, hotels, and restaurants were built. Some of these old buildings are still standing today.

However, Magadino's importance as a port began to fade. This happened when railway lines opened to Locarno in 1874 and to Luino in 1882. Trains became the main way to transport goods and people. From the 1880s until the 1960s, the town didn't grow much. By 2000, most people living in Magadino worked outside the village. In 2005, almost half of the jobs in Magadino were in the service industry.
