Rivera was a town in the Lugano area of Ticino, a canton in Switzerland. It is no longer a separate town. On November 21, 2010, Rivera joined with the towns of Medeglia, Bironico, Camignolo, and Sigirino to form a new, larger town called Monteceneri.

History of Rivera
Rivera was first written about in the year 1296. Back then, it was called Sorenzino. Later, in 1348, it was known as Rivera.
Scientists have found old items and graves from the Iron Age and the Roman times in Rivera. This shows people lived there a very long time ago. In the Middle Ages, Rivera was part of a larger community called Carvina.
In the 1700s, Rivera became its own church area, separate from Bironico. The main church, S. Spirito, was rebuilt between 1779 and 1793.
People in Rivera mostly worked in farming, especially raising animals in mountain pastures. The town grew a lot when the Ceneri tunnel was built from 1872 to 1882. A new road in 1811 and the train station also helped the town develop. In 1972, a cable car station opened in Rivera, taking people up to Monte Tamaro.
Geography of Rivera
Rivera covers an area of about 13.35 square kilometers (5.15 square miles). Most of this land, about 76.2%, is covered by forests. About 7.1% is used for farming. The rest of the land includes buildings, roads, rivers, and some areas that are not used for anything.
Rivera is located in the Lugano area, in a valley called Vedeggio. It includes the main village of Rivera and smaller areas known as Soresina, Sorencino, and Capidogno.
Rivera's Coat of Arms
The coat of arms for Rivera was created in 1952. It has three parts. The top part shows blue waves, which stand for the radio waves from the Radio Svizzera Italiana station on Monte Ceneri. The middle part shows Monte Ceneri itself, with green hills. The bottom part has two black arches. These arches represent the tunnels that connect the two main parts of Ticino, which are on either side of Mount Ceneri.
People of Rivera
In December 2004, Rivera had 1,462 people living there. About 20.3% of the people living in Rivera in 2008 were from other countries. Over ten years, from 1997 to 2007, the number of people in Rivera grew by 6.4%.
Most people in Rivera speak Italian (about 88.6%). The next most common language is German (4.8%), followed by Serbo-Croatian (2.2%).
In 2008, there were slightly more women (50.8%) than men (49.2%) living in Rivera.

In 2009, there were 246 students in Rivera. The education system in Ticino offers up to three years of optional kindergarten. Rivera had 35 children in kindergarten.
Primary school lasts for five years. In Rivera, 72 students attended regular primary schools, and 2 students attended a special primary school.
For middle school, students can either go to a two-year middle school and then a two-year program to prepare for a job, or a four-year program to get ready for higher education. There were 67 students in the two-year middle school and 21 in the four-year program.
After middle school, students can choose different paths. Some go to school while doing an internship or apprenticeship to learn a trade. Others go to school full-time to prepare for university or college. In Rivera, 15 students were full-time vocational students, and 32 were part-time. Transport in Rivera
Rivera has a train station called Rivera-Bironico. It is on the Gotthard railway line, which is an important train route.
