Sigirino was once a town (or municipality) in the Lugano area of Ticino, a canton (like a state) in Switzerland. On November 21, 2010, Sigirino joined with four other towns – Medeglia, Bironico, Camignolo, and Rivera – to form a new, bigger town called Monteceneri.

History

Sigirino was first mentioned in old writings way back in 1335. During the Middle Ages (a long time ago, from about 500 AD to 1500 AD), Sigirino was part of a larger community called Carvina valley. This community included all the villages in the upper Vedeggio valley, and its main center was Bironico.

In 1296, records show that Como Cathedral owned land, fields, forests, and even houses in Sigirino. It's thought that Sigirino might have had some kind of protective walls or forts back then.

The local church, St. Andrew, was also first mentioned in 1296. It was completely rebuilt in the 1500s and fixed up again in the 1700s. In 1625, Sigirino got its own parish (its own church area with a priest), separating from Bironico.

For a long time, the town's economy was mostly about farming. Many people also left to find work elsewhere. Today, Sigirino is part of a busy area with businesses and factories in the valley.
