Satish Gujral (born December 25, 1925 – died March 26, 2020) was a famous Indian artist. He was a painter, sculptor, muralist (someone who paints large wall art), and writer. He lived during the time after India became independent. In 1999, he received the Padma Vibhushan, which is the second-highest award a civilian can get in India. His older brother, Inder Kumar Gujral, was the Prime Minister of India from 1997 to 1998.

Satish Gujral's Early Life
Satish Gujral was born in a place called Jhelum, which was part of British India at the time. Today, Jhelum is in Pakistan. When he was young, he had an accident while crossing a bridge in Kashmir. He fell into fast-moving water, which caused him to lose his hearing. He got his hearing back many years later, in 1998, after a surgery.
Education and Artistic Journey
Because of his hearing problem, many schools did not want to admit Satish. One day, he drew a picture of a bird on a tree branch. This showed his early talent and interest in art.
Starting Art School
In 1939, he joined the Mayo School of Arts in Lahore to study applied arts. Later, in 1944, he moved to Bombay and joined Sir JJ School of Art. However, he had to leave in 1947 because he kept getting sick.
Studying Art in Mexico
In 1952, Satish Gujral received a special scholarship. This allowed him to study art in Mexico City at the Palacio de Bellas Artes. There, he learned from two very famous artists, Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros.
Important Works and Achievements
The Partition of India was a very difficult time when India was divided. This event and the sadness of people moving from their homes deeply affected young Satish. These feelings often appeared in the art he created.
Art Shows Around the World
From 1952 to 1974, Gujral showed his amazing sculptures, paintings, and graphic art in many cities. These cities included New York City, New Delhi, Montreal, Berlin, and Tokyo.
Designing Buildings
Satish Gujral was also a talented architect. He designed the Belgium Embassy in New Delhi. This building was chosen by international architects as one of the best buildings built in the 20th century.
Satish Gujral's Family Life
Satish Gujral lived in New Delhi with his wife, Kiran. Their son, Mohit Gujral, is also an architect. He is married to a former model named Feroze Gujral. Satish and Kiran also had two daughters. Alpana is a jewellery designer, and Raseel Gujral Ansal is an interior designer. She owns design companies called Casa Paradox and Casa Pop. Raseel is married to Navin Ansal.
As mentioned before, Satish was the brother of I. K. Gujral, who became the 12th Prime Minister of India.
Awards and Recognition
In 1999, Satish Gujral received the Padma Vibhushan. This is India's second-highest award for civilians. In April 2014, he was also honored with the NDTV Indian of the Year Award.
