E.W. Scripps came to California in 1890. He traveled by steamship to San Diego. He was very excited as he explored the land. He chose a dry hill about 16 miles from the city to build his home. He named it Miramar, which means "sea view."

Founding Miramar: The Scripps Family Home

E.W. Scripps and his half-sister, Ellen Browning Scripps, bought 400 acres of land. This land is now part of Scripps Ranch. They paid $5,000 for it. E.W. kept 30 acres for his home and gardens. Ellen owned the rest of the land.

Over time, E.W. Scripps bought even more land, reaching 2,100 acres. He planted many trees on his property. These included citrus, pine, and eucalyptus trees. Some of these old trees can still be seen today at the Scripps Ranch Swim and Racquet Club. Ellen lived at Miramar until 1897, and E.W. lived there until 1917.
