Lots of different seafood can be used to make this tasty dish.
- Fish: This can be salmon, tuna, or anchovy.
- Shellfish: Think of clams, scallops, mussels, and shrimp.
- Other sea creatures: Squid, lobster, and even sea snails (called scungilli) can be used.
Sometimes, people also use imitation seafood. The seafood can be fresh from the ocean, frozen, or even from a can, like canned tuna.
Different Kinds of Seafood Pizza
There are many unique ways to make seafood pizza around the world.
Pizza alla Napoletana
This pizza comes from Naples, Italy. It usually has tomato, mozzarella cheese, anchovies, and olive oil.
Pizza ai Frutti di Mare
Frutti di Mare means "fruits of the sea" in Italian. This pizza often has scampi (a type of shrimp), mussels, or squid. It's special because it usually does not have cheese. Instead, the seafood is placed right on top of a tomato sauce.
Tuna and Onions Pizza
This is another popular Italian pizza. It's called pizza con tonno e cipolle. It has tomato, mozzarella, canned tuna, slices of red onions, and olive oil.
Pizza Pescatore
Pizza pescatore means "fisherman's pizza." This kind of seafood pizza is made with mussels and squid.
Seafood Pizza in Restaurants
Many restaurants around the world offer seafood pizzas.
Big Pizza Chains
- Domino's Pizza sells a seafood pizza in Vietnam. In 2012, it was their most popular pizza there!
- Pizza Hut has offered a seafood pizza called "Seafood Symphony" in Malaysia and India. The Indian version used fresh seafood from the waters near Kochi, India.
Local Pizza Places
- Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in New Haven, Connecticut, is famous for its white clam pizza. It uses fresh clams.
- Ko Olina's Pizza Corner in Kapolei, Hawaii, created a unique pizza called "Original Hawaiian Poke Pizza." It uses poke, which is a raw seafood salad. The poke is added to the pizza after it's cooked.
The World's Most Expensive Pizza
There's a very special seafood pizza that was once listed in Guinness World Records as the world's most expensive.
- It's called the "C6" and is made at Steveston Pizza Co. in Steveston, British Columbia, Canada.
- This pizza costs C$850 (Canadian dollars)!
- It's topped with lobster, caviar, tiger prawns, and smoked salmon.
- The pizza is cut into 10 slices, so each slice costs C$85.
- You have to order it one day in advance.
Before the "C6," a C$178 pizza made with white truffle by Gordon Ramsay held the record. Other very expensive pizzas exist, like a US$4,200 pizza with caviar, lobster, and 24-carat gold leaf in Glasgow, Scotland. However, these are not officially recognized by Guinness World Records.
