Sergeant's Crag is a small mountain, also called a fell, in the beautiful Lake District in England. It sits on a ridge between two valleys, Langstrath and Greenup. This makes it part of the Central Fells area.

Exploring Sergeant's Crag

As you go north from a bigger mountain called High Raise, the land gets narrower. It also becomes more rocky. Then, the ground suddenly turns east and forms a rocky bump, which is Sergeant's Crag.

What the Crag Looks Like

The main rocky face of Sergeant's Crag is on its northwest side. A deep cut, like a narrow ditch, runs through it. The lower, flatter rocks here are popular for rock climbing. Another rocky part, called Bull Crag, is a bit further south on the same side.

From Sergeant's Crag, the ridge goes down a little. It then ends at another fell called Eagle Crag. Sergeant's Crag has clear edges. To the west is the Langstrath valley. To the east are gentler slopes that lead down to Greenup Gill, which is a small stream. These two streams meet below Eagle Crag. They then form a larger stream called Stonethwaite Beck. You might also spot a large, noticeable rock called Blea Rock at the bottom of the Langstrath slopes.

What Rocks Make Up Sergeant's Crag?

The rocks you see on Sergeant's Crag are mostly a type of sandstone that has small pebbles in it. There's also a rock called breccia, which is made of broken rock pieces stuck together. These rocks are part of something geologists call the Pavey Ark Member. Most of the fell is made of rocks from the Seathwaite Formation. These rocks are formed from volcanic ash and bits of other rocks.

How to Reach the Top

A stone wall runs along the ridge from Eagle Crag. A path usually follows this wall, and it's the most common way to climb Sergeant's Crag. However, the path can become hard to see as the ground gets wider near High Raise. You can also climb the crag by going around it. This means walking up from further south along either the Langstrath or Greenup valleys, even without a clear path.

Views from the Summit

The very top of Sergeant's Crag is partly surrounded by the stone wall. There's a small pile of stones, called a cairn, on a rocky spot. From here, you can see Bowfell and Esk Pike along the Langstrath valley. You can also spot other tall mountains in the Southern Fells area, peeking over Glaramara.

High Raise and Ullscarf block some of the view to the east. But you get a fantastic view of the mountains in the North Western and Northern Fells.
