Early Life and Education
Setti Warren was born in 1970, along with his twin sister Makeda. His father, Joseph D. Warren, worked for Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis. His mother, Elpidia Lopez, was a social worker.
Setti went to Jackson Walnut Park, a private school in Newton. He then attended Newton North High School. There, he was the class president for all four years.
He later went to Boston College. He was also elected student body president there. In 1993, he earned a degree in history. In 2006, he received a law degree from Suffolk University Law School. However, he did not take the exam to become a practicing lawyer.
After college, Warren worked for his family's business for two years. In 1995, he joined U.S. President Bill Clinton's re-election campaign. From 1996 to 2000, he worked in different offices at the White House.
He then worked for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) from 2000 to 2001. After that, he worked in fundraising at Boston College.
In 2003, Warren joined the United States Naval Reserve. He also worked on U.S. Senator John Kerry's presidential campaign. After the election, he became a deputy director in Kerry's Massachusetts office.
In October 2007, Warren left Kerry's office to serve in the Navy in Iraq. While he was training, a group started preparing for him to run for mayor of Newton.
Mayor of Newton
In May 2008, Newton Mayor David Cohen announced he would not run again. This meant the mayor's job was open for the first time since 1971. Warren, home from Iraq in June 2008, said he planned to run. He had to wait until he finished his Navy service in October. This was because military rules do not allow active service members to run for office.
In November 2008, Warren officially announced his campaign. He promised to protect the trust between citizens and public servants.
During his campaign, Warren talked about his experience with FEMA. He was elected mayor on November 3, 2009. He won against State Representative Ruth Balser. Warren started his term as mayor on January 1, 2010.
Warren ran for re-election on November 5, 2013. He won against Newton Alderman Ted Hess-Mahan.
Engine 6 Project
In June 2013, Mayor Warren announced he would stop funding for a project. This project aimed to build affordable homes for people who used to be homeless. The project was called Engine 6 and was planned for Beacon Street in Waban. Developers had asked for money from the city to build it. Warren's decision to stop the funding meant the project could not move forward.
U.S. Senate Campaign, 2012
On May 9, 2011, Setti Warren announced he would run for the United States Senate. He wanted to represent Massachusetts in the 2012 election. However, on September 29, 2011, Warren decided to leave the race. He said he did not see a clear way to win.
He then supported Elizabeth Warren, who became the Democratic candidate. Setti Warren later said he regretted running for Senate so soon after becoming mayor. He felt he had run "too early."
Massachusetts Gubernatorial Campaign, 2018
On May 20, 2017, Warren announced he was running for Governor of Massachusetts. He spoke in front of his home, surrounded by family and friends. He said that income inequality was a very important issue.
He suggested ideas like single-payer healthcare (where the government pays for most healthcare). He also supported free college tuition and a new tax for millionaires. He also wanted a high-speed rail project across Massachusetts.
Warren ended his campaign on April 26, 2018. He explained that it was too hard to raise enough money to win against the current governor. He did not support any of the other Democratic candidates after he left the race.
Personal Life
Setti Warren married Elizabeth Tasker "Tassy" Plummer on August 12, 2006. John Kerry was one of his groomsmen. Tassy is from Newton and met Warren while working on the Kerry presidential campaign.
