Plot Summary
Pi's New Home
A young orange wrasse fish named Pi (Freddie Prinze, Jr.) lives happily with his parents. They live in the polluted harbor of Boston, Massachusetts. One day, a fishing boat catches them in a net. Pi's parents help him escape, but they cannot get away themselves. Before they are taken, Pi's mother tells him to go live with his aunt.
Pi's porpoise friend Percy (Trent Ford) and Percy's mother Meg (Megahn Perry) offer to take him. Pi does not want to leave, hoping his parents will return. Meg sadly tells him that once fish are caught in a net, they are gone forever. Pi is very sad that his parents are gone.
Meg and Percy take Pi to a beautiful reef. He will live there with his aunt Pearl. By the time Pi reaches the reef, he is a teenager. He has lived with the porpoises for most of his life.
Meeting New Friends and a Bully
The first fish Pi meets are three old marlin named Moe, Jack, and Manny. They show him the way to Pearl's home. On his way, Pi sees Cordelia (Evan Rachel Wood). She is a beautiful angelfish who has been on the cover of National Geographic magazine. Pi immediately falls in love with her.
He also meets his cousin Dylan (Andy Dick). Dylan quickly becomes Pi's best friend. But soon, Pi meets Troy (Donal Logue). Troy is the meanest tiger shark in the ocean. He scares everyone on the reef. Troy also wants Cordelia to be his mate.
Pi tries to stand up to Troy, but Troy attacks him. Cordelia tells Pi that the only dangerous place on the reef is near Troy. She says Troy is her problem and asks Pi not to get involved.
Aunt Pearl and Nerissa
Pi and Dylan find their way home. Pearl (Fran Drescher) is Pi's aunt. She is very happy to see him. Pearl is a fortune teller and has a sea star assistant named Madge. She uses a pink pearl that Dylan's father gave her as a crystal ball.
Pearl reads Pi's future. She is surprised and says he is meant for great things. She tells him the reef is the best place for him to find his destiny. Pearl also tells Pi not to go near an old pirate wreck or a forbidden place called "flat bottom." Dylan explains that "flat bottom" is the open sea. It is outside the safe area, where humans use fishing nets.
Dylan shows Pi around. He tells Pi about Nerissa (Rob Schneider). Nerissa is a wise old loggerhead turtle. He lives in an abandoned shipwreck and knows martial arts. People say he is a wizard.
Pi's Promise and Training
Dylan leaves after they have a close call near the open sea. Pi sees Cordelia again. He remembers her warning not to interfere. But then he hears her scream. She has a fishing lure stuck in her fin. Pi promises to help her. He takes Cordelia to Buddy and Lou, who remove the lure. Cordelia then invites Pi to a concert.
Before the concert, Pi and Dylan watch Nerissa. Nerissa defends his blue pearl from a group of squid. At the concert, Pi learns about Thornton (John Rhys Davies). Thornton is a harbor seal who tells stories about fighting a big monster.
Later, Pi and Cordelia look at the stars. Cordelia starts to fall in love with Pi. Suddenly, Troy arrives and chases them. Pi refuses to leave Cordelia. Troy attacks Pi even worse than before. Cordelia makes a deal with Troy: if he leaves Pi alone, she will marry Troy. Troy knocks Pi out. A current carries Pi to Nerissa's shipwreck.
The next day, Nerissa tells Pi what happened. Pi decides he has had enough of Troy's bullying. He asks Nerissa to teach him how to fight Troy. Nerissa first says no. Pi asks other reef residents for help. The marlins say they are too old. Thornton admits his monster story was not entirely true.
Troy's helpers, Bart and Eddie, try to steal Nerissa's pearl. Pi and Dylan scare them away. Nerissa sees Pi's skills and agrees to train him.
The Final Battle
On Pi's first day of training, Pearl is worried. She tells Pi she would be very sad if he got hurt. Pi reminds his aunt that she told him he would find his destiny on the reef. He found it when he met Cordelia, and now he is losing her. Pi reminds Pearl that he could not save his parents, but he can still save Cordelia.
Nerissa leads Pi through a difficult valley. It has sharp elkhorn coral, burning fire coral, and a narrow tunnel called Bottleneck Alley. Finally, there is the West Indies current, full of dangerous Portuguese man o' war.
Cordelia learns about Pi's upcoming fight with Troy. Nerissa tells Pi the story of his blue pearl. He gave it to his wife, but she was caught in the open sea. She was taken to a wildlife sanctuary. Nerissa begged for help, but no one was brave enough. Pi understands. He asks how to stop Troy for good. Nerissa says Troy has never learned about anything bigger than himself. He tells Pi that the ocean is bigger than Troy. If Pi can use the ocean against Troy, Troy's size will not matter.
Cordelia finds Pi and tries to make him change his mind. She is willing to marry Troy to save Pi's life. That night, Troy's helpers steal Pearl's pearl. Pearl is heartbroken because Dylan's father gave it to her. Pi realizes he cannot give up, even if others doubt him.
When Troy returns to the reef, Pi starts a chase. He leads Troy through the difficult valley. Troy hits all the obstacles. They reach the open sea. Nerissa helps by stopping Bart and Eddie. Dylan pushes them into a lobster hole and gets his mother's pearl back. Troy hits Pi with his tail, burying him under rocks. Nerissa tries to help but Troy hits him too. Just when all seems lost, Thornton and the marlins arrive to fight Troy. The marlins apologize to Nerissa for not helping him before.
Percy and Meg return and free Pi. Troy then targets Percy. Pi sees a fishing net. He plans to trick Troy into it. Troy thinks Pi is doomed in the open sea. Troy chases Pi to the surface. Pi leads Troy into the fishing net. He narrowly escapes Troy's jaws by leaping through the top of the net. Troy is trapped in the net and pulled out of the sea.
Pi is called a hero by everyone on the reef. They make fun of Troy, thinking he will become seafood. Nerissa says he sees Pi like a son and gives him his pearl. Pi is honored and does not know what to say. Nerissa tells Pi he knows exactly what to say, but not to him. Pi gives Cordelia the pearl, and she accepts it. They share a kiss as the reef celebrates. Bart and Eddie are happy too, now that they are free from Troy.
In a scene after the credits, Thornton tells Pi's story to everyone on the reef. He is proud to tell a true story about himself. He ends by saying, "Pi was determined, he refused to despair, I know it's all true, for you see, I was there..."
