Shenfield is a town in Essex, England. It is a suburb of Brentwood. In 2020, about 5,396 people lived there.

A Look at Shenfield's Past

Shenfield used to be a small village. It was built along an old Roman road. This road connected London and Colchester. Today, this road is called the A1023.

A writer and church leader named Nathaniel Ward worked in Shenfield from 1648 until 1652.

In the 1870s, a book called Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Shenfield. It said the village was near the railway. It also mentioned that Shenfield has been around since at least the time of Edward the Confessor.

Shenfield was once its own civil parish. In 1931, it had 3,501 people. In 1934, it became part of the urban district of Brentwood.

Exploring Shenfield's Location

The original village centre is about 1 mile (1.6 km) north-east of Brentwood. Shenfield has some small industrial areas. It also has a busy shopping area.

The main church in Shenfield is called St Mary the Virgin. St Mary's primary school is also nearby.

The town of Hutton is to the east of Shenfield. It is now mostly part of Shenfield's built-up area.

Sports and Fun in Shenfield

Shenfield is home to the Shenfield Cricket Club. This club started in 1921. It is located at the Courage Playing Fields. The Courage brewing family gave this land for the cricket club to use.

The club's symbol is a cockerel. This matches the symbol of the Courage brand. It also matches the weathervane on St Mary's church.

The Courage Playing Fields also have a play area for children. There are more playing fields on Alexander Lane. These are next to Shenfield High School.
