Signal Mountain (Vermont) facts for kids

Signal Mountain is a mountain located in Caledonia County, Vermont. It is part of the beautiful Groton State Forest. This mountain stands tall, reaching an elevation of about 3,370 feet (1,027 meters) above sea level.

Where is Signal Mountain?

Groton State Forest

How Water Flows from Signal Mountain

Water from Signal Mountain travels in different directions. This is called a "drainage pattern." Rain and melting snow on the mountain flow into various streams and rivers. These rivers then carry the water to larger bodies of water.

Water Flowing North and East

The water from the north side of Signal Mountain flows into Noyes Pond. From there, it goes into the South Branch of the Wells River. The Wells River then joins the mighty Connecticut River. Eventually, this water reaches Long Island Sound in Connecticut.

Water from the east side of the mountain also drains into Heath Brook. Heath Brook then flows into the South Branch of the Wells River, following the same path to the Connecticut River and Long Island Sound.

Water Flowing South and West

The south side of Signal Mountain sends its water into the Waits River. The Waits River is another river that flows into the Connecticut River. So, water from the south also ends up in Long Island Sound.

On the west side, water flows into Great Brook. Great Brook then joins the Winooski River. The Winooski River is special because it flows into Lake Champlain. Lake Champlain is a large freshwater lake between Vermont and New York. From Lake Champlain, the water eventually makes its way to the Gulf of Saint Lawrence in Canada.
