Sinclairville's Early Days
The village was started in 1809 by Major Samuel Sinclear. He named it "Sinclearville." This happened after the American Revolutionary War. Before this, the Seneca people lived here for hundreds of years. They were part of the Iroquois Confederacy (also called Haudenosaunee).
During the war, the Seneca people were allies with the British. After the war, they had to give up most of their land to the United States and New York state. Many Iroquois moved to Upper Canada. The British Crown gave them new lands there.
The village of Sinclairville officially became a village in 1887. People who live there often call it "the heart of Chautauqua County."
