Soda Stereo was a super famous rock band from Argentina. They started in Buenos Aires in 1982. This band became very popular all over the world in the 1980s and 1990s. Many people think they are the most important and influential Spanish-speaking band ever. They are truly a legend in Latin music.
The band had three main members. They were Gustavo Cerati (who sang and played guitar), Héctor "Zeta" Bosio (who played bass), and Charly Alberti (who played drums). This kind of band with three members is often called a "power trio."

The Start of Soda Stereo
Soda Stereo appeared when Argentina's rock music scene was changing. This was around the early 1980s. At this time, Argentina was becoming a democracy again. This brought a lot of hope and new energy. Many other important bands also started during this period. Some of these bands were Virus, Zas, Sumo, and Los Fabulosos Cadillacs.
Early Music Style
When Soda Stereo first started, their music was influenced by "new wave" bands. These included bands like The Police and Elvis Costello. They also liked "post-punk" bands such as Television. You can hear these influences in their early albums. Some of these albums are Soda Stereo (1984) and Nada Personal (1985). Other early albums include Signos (1986) and Doble Vida (1988).
Evolving Sound
Over time, Soda Stereo's music changed. It became heavier and more like alternative rock. They started to get ideas from other music styles too. These included neo-psychedelia, classic rock, and progressive rock. They also took influences from shoegaze, britpop, and electronic music. You can hear these changes in albums like Canción Animal (1990) and Dynamo (1992). Their album Sueño Stereo (1995) also shows this new sound.
Amazing Success and Influence
Many people agree that Soda Stereo is one of the greatest bands in Latin rock history. They are the best-selling band ever in Argentina. They have had almost 6 million listeners. They also set records for album sales and how many people came to their concerts.
In Latin America alone, the band sold over 17 million albums. This happened during their 15 years together. Even after the band stopped playing, this number kept growing.
After the Band Split Up
After Soda Stereo separated, each member started new projects. Gustavo Cerati had a very successful solo career. He released five studio albums on his own. Most of these albums sold very well in Argentina.
Zeta Bosio played bass for different groups for a while. Now, he travels as a DJ. Charly Alberti also found success. He started his own company called CybeRelations. He also played in his family band, MOLE.
A Sad Goodbye and a Reunion
In 2014, Gustavo Cerati passed away. He had been in a coma for four years after a stroke. His passing meant the official end of the band as a trio.
In 2020, Zeta Bosio and Charly Alberti decided to go on a reunion tour. They used the name Soda Stereo for this tour. It was called "Gracias Totales – Soda Stereo." They traveled across North and South America. Many guest singers joined them on stage. These included Cerati's son, Richard Coleman, Mon Laferte, and Juanes. The tour had to stop because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 1986 hundreds of Chilean youths received Soda Stereo as popular idols. The song that created this first contact was "Nada Personal (:es)" (Nothing Personal) which became a radio hit. A little later in February 1987 Soda had a strong showing at the Viña del Mar International Song Festival, again in Chile. This, in effect, opened the doors to the rest of Latin America.
