History of South Brent
High up on the moorlands, you can find old hut circles (where people lived), enclosures, and barrows (burial mounds). These all date back to the Bronze Age, showing people lived here a very long time ago.
The land of Brent used to belong to Buckfast Abbey from the early 11th century. Later, in the 1500s, a man named Sir William Petre bought it when many monasteries were closed down. South Brent was once a busy place for making wool and had two big markets each year.
Brent Hill's Past
Brent Hill is a steep hill just outside the village, which is how South Brent got its name. "Brent" comes from an old English word meaning "steep." On this hill, you can see the remains of an old building that might have been a chapel. There are also ruins of a windmill that was built around 1790.
Life in South Brent
The center of South Brent is inside the Dartmoor National Park. It's a busy and active community with many shops, pubs, and local businesses. It also has a primary school, a village hall, a sports ground, and a community center.
South Brent Primary School
South Brent primary school teaches about 250 children. The school buildings are modern and replaced an older school. The old school building is now used as the community center.
St Petroc’s Church
The village has a very old church called St Petroc’s Church. It has a huge Norman tower that was likely the main tower of a cross-shaped building. Part of the church was taken down in the early 1300s. The main part of the church was then rebuilt with two side sections. In the early 1400s, these side sections were made even bigger. The church has a beautiful font (a basin for baptisms) made of red sandstone, which is from the late 1100s. It looks similar to fonts in other churches nearby.
Next to the churchyard, you can find the manor house. Part of this house dates back to the 1400s. In 1436, a sad event happened when the vicar, Rev John Hay, was taken from the church and killed during a service. The door he was taken through was later walled up, but you can still just see where it used to be.
Getting Around
South Brent is located right next to the Devon Expressway. This main road connects the village to Exeter, which is about 51 kilometers (32 miles) to the northeast, and Plymouth, about 29 kilometers (18 miles) to the west.
Brent Railway Station
Brent railway station first opened on the South Devon Railway in 1848. It later became a junction for a train line that went to Kingsbridge starting in 1893. The station closed in 1964. However, for many years, people have wanted to reopen it to help reduce car traffic on the roads. The closest train station now is Ivybridge railway station, which is about 7.2 kilometers (4.5 miles) away.
Sports and Fun
The Palstone Park recreation ground is where the South Brent Football Club plays. This club was started in 1931 and was first called South Brent United. The park is also home to the South Brent Judo Club, which began in 1974.
People who live in South Brent sometimes say that the village gets more rain than other nearby towns. It seems that the hills of Dartmoor might make the weather a bit different in South Brent.
