The St. James General Store is a very old and special place. It is located on Moriches Road. People say it is the oldest general store in the United States that has been open all the time. This store and other old buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. They are part of the Saint James District.

Many of these old buildings from the 1800s are found along New York State Route 25A. This road is also known as North Country Road. One important building is the Saint James Episcopal Church. The hamlet got its name from this church in the 1850s. In 1873, the St. James Rail Road Station was built. Even though it is small, this historic station is the second-oldest one on the Long Island Rail Road.

St. James is in the eastern part of the town of Smithtown. It is located east of the hamlet of Smithtown. Just east of St. James is the main campus of Stony Brook University. This is a large public research university.

St. James is about a 15-minute drive from Port Jefferson. This makes it easy to get to the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Ferry. The ferry can take you across the Long Island Sound to New England. This is a great way to travel and avoid traffic in New York City.
