Watching Star Trek at Home: Home Media Releases

In the early 1980s, you could buy a few Star Trek episodes on VHS tapes. These tapes usually had two episodes each.

Later, in March 1981, some season one episodes came out on CED discs. When the movie Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan came out in 1982, Paramount Home Video released the episode "Space Seed" for a lower price. This helped make it popular to buy TV shows and movies for home viewing.

From 1985 to 1989, you could get a full set of season one episodes on laserdisc, VHS, and Betamax. These usually had two episodes per volume.

The very first pilot episode, "The Cage," was released in 1986. It combined black-and-white footage with color scenes from the two-part episode "The Menagerie." In 1988, the full color version of "The Cage" was found and released.

Starting in August 1999, season one episodes became available on DVD. These were released two episodes at a time. A complete season box set with new bonus features came out in August 2004.

Season one was also released on HD-DVD in late 2007. These discs worked in both regular DVD players and HD-DVD players. However, HD-DVD was later stopped, so only season one was released in this format. Buyers of this special HD-DVD set could even get a remote control shaped like a Star Trek phaser!

The documentary Star Trek: Beyond the Final Frontier was included with the season one HD-DVD box set. It was on the DVD part of the set.

The first season, with updated special effects, came out on Blu-ray on April 28, 2009. On September 6, 2016, it was re-released as part of the Star Trek 50th Anniversary set. This big set included all three seasons of the original show, the first six Star Trek movies, and the 1970s animated series on Blu-Ray.
