Steel Knotts is a small mountain, also called a fell, in the English Lake District. It is located near Ullswater lake, in the area known as the Far Eastern Fells. This fell sits on a ridge, which is like a long, narrow hill, between two valleys named Fusedale and Martindale.

Exploring Steel Knotts: A Small Mountain's Shape

Steel Knotts is part of a larger group of hills in the Lake District. From a higher point called Wether Hill, a smaller ridge branches off towards the west. This ridge first goes over Brownthwaite Crag, which is about 444 meters (1,456 feet) high. Then it reaches the rockier top of Steel Knotts. After that, it gently turns east and quickly drops down towards Howtown and Ullswater lake.

The Martindale Edge Ridge

The ridge where Steel Knotts sits is also known as Martindale Edge. It stretches for about two miles (around 3.2 kilometers). To the east of this ridge is the Fusedale valley, which has very steep sides. A small stream, called Fusedale Beck, forms the edge of the fell on this side. This stream flows north into Ullswater lake, right below the northern tip of the ridge. You can see some rocky cliffs on this side, especially closer to the northern end.

On the western side of Steel Knotts, the slopes are not as steep at the top. They then drop down over rough land towards the village of Martindale. Here, the boundary of the fell is marked by Howegrain Beck. This stream collects water from Bannerdale and Rampsgill Dale and carries it to Ullswater lake at Sandwick.

Connection to Hallin Fell

From the top of Steel Knotts, another short ridge goes northwest. It quickly drops down over a spot called Birkies Knott to the valley floor. Here, the road through Martindale crosses at a place called The Coombes. After this, the land rises again to Hallin Fell. Hallin Fell offers great views of Ullswater because it's located perfectly between Sandwick and Howtown. Even though the narrow ridge going down to Howtown looks like the natural end of Steel Knotts, Hallin Fell is actually the true continuation of its high ground.

Reaching the Top of Steel Knotts

The very top of Steel Knotts has a cool, rocky peak called Pikeawassa. It's a fun little climb to get to the very top, making for an exciting finish to your walk. From the summit, you get amazing views of the Martindale valley. You can also see the famous Helvellyn mountain range in the distance.

Popular Paths to the Summit

You can climb Steel Knotts from a few different places:

  • From Howtown, a small village by Ullswater.
  • From The Coombes, which is near St Peter's church on the Martindale road.
  • You can also reach the ridge just south of the summit from Martindale Old Church.
  • Another way is to start at Gowk Hill, which you can reach through Fusedale.
