Journey in Pageants
Miss Venezuela 2008
Stefanía won the title of Miss Venezuela 2008 on September 10, 2008, in Caracas. She was crowned by the previous year's winner, Dayana Mendoza, who had also won Miss Universe 2008.
During the competition, Stefanía also won awards for "Miss Elegance," "Best Body," and "Best Face." She was the second woman from the state of Trujillo to win the Miss Venezuela title. The first was Bárbara Palacios, who also went on to win Miss Universe 1986.
Miss Universe 2009
On August 23, 2009, Stefanía was crowned Miss Universe 2009 in Nassau, Bahamas. In a historic moment, she was crowned by Dayana Mendoza, making it the first time ever that a country won the Miss Universe title two years in a row.
Her prize package was amazing. It included money, a one-year contract to represent the Miss Universe Organization, and the chance to travel the world. She also received a luxury apartment in New York City for a year, designer clothes, and beauty products. A special prize was $100,000 for a two-year course at the New York Film Academy.
As Miss Universe, Stefanía promised to travel the world. She wanted to raise awareness about important issues and teach people about HIV/AIDS.
A Year as Miss Universe
After winning, Stefanía was interviewed by news channels all over the world. When she returned to Venezuela, she was welcomed as a hero.
She officially earned a Guinness record for being the first Miss Universe winner crowned by a fellow countrywoman.
The president of Venezuela at the time, Hugo Chávez, congratulated her. He offered his government's support for her campaign against AIDS.
During her reign, Stefanía traveled to many countries. She went to Indonesia, France, Russia, Colombia, Panama, Brazil, India, and many others. She often went to crown the next Miss Universe contestants in those countries. She also attended special events, like the Latin Grammy Awards in Las Vegas.
In March 2010, she became the official face of Avon Products. In May of that year, People en Español magazine named her one of its "50 Most Beautiful People."
Speaking Out for Venezuela
When her time as Miss Universe ended on August 23, 2010, Stefanía passed her crown to Ximena Navarrete of Mexico. During her final walk on stage, she held up a Venezuelan flag that had seven stars.
This was seen as a statement. In 2006, the Venezuelan government, led by President Hugo Chávez, had changed the flag to have eight stars. By using the older seven-star flag, many people believed Stefanía was showing she disagreed with the government's new policies.
In 2014, during protests in Venezuela, Stefanía joined a campaign called "Your Voice is Your Power." She used her fame to speak out against violence and the lack of free speech in her home country. She showed her support for protestors who were against the government of Nicolás Maduro.
