Stony Brook, also known as Stoney Brook, is a stream in New Jersey, United States. It flows through parts of Hunterdon and Mercer counties. This brook is a "tributary," which means it's a smaller stream that flows into a larger one. Stony Brook eventually joins the Millstone River. From there, its water travels to the Raritan River and finally reaches the Atlantic Ocean!
Where Stony Brook Flows
Stony Brook begins its journey just south of Ringoes. It starts flowing south through the Amwell Lake Wildlife Management Area. This area helps protect local wildlife.
As it continues, the brook turns southeast. It flows next to Route 31 for a while. Along this path, it collects water from smaller streams like Peters Brook and Woodsville Brook.
The brook then gets more water from a stream coming from Sourland Mountain. It crosses Pennington-Hopewell Road and flows through the Hopewell Valley Country Club. It also passes through the Stony Brook–Millstone Watershed Association's nature reserve, a place dedicated to protecting water.
After this, the Stony Brook Branch joins in. The brook then flows between the Bristol-Myers Squibb campus and the Baldwin State Wildlife Management Area. Here, it receives Baldwins Creek.
Stony Brook continues through Kunkel Park and is joined by Lewis Brook. It then turns east, passing through Old Mill Road County Park and Rosedale Park. In Rosedale Park, it meets Honey Branch.
The brook then flows through a hilly area, making several large curves. It turns south near Coventry Farm Park. It goes through the Princeton Open Space Acquisition area and crosses under Route 206.
Finally, Stony Brook flows next to Quaker Road (CR-533). It reaches the Delaware and Raritan Canal, where it turns northeast. It receives Duck Pond Run from under the canal, crosses Alexander Street, and then flows into the Millstone River near Princeton.
