History of Summerville
Summerville was officially started on September 20, 1873. A man named William H. Patten created the town plan. He had a place to store goods along Ruckle Road. This road was one of the first routes over the Blue Mountains. It was very popular for travel and trade.
However, Ruckle Road was washed out in 1884. This made it harder for people and goods to travel through Summerville. Many business owners and people looking to invest then moved to Elgin, Oregon.
In 1888, a map of Summerville showed it had many important buildings. These included an opera hall, a bank, a place to keep horses (livery), and a drugstore. There were also many other stores. That same year, a fire destroyed half of the buildings on the main street. But they were quickly rebuilt.
By 1910, the town's businesses were already slowing down a lot. If buildings were destroyed after that time, they were not replaced. In 1890, Summerville had 280 people living there.
