Takehito Koyasu's Journey as a Voice Actor
How He Started in Voice Acting
When Takehito Koyasu was in junior high, he loved movies so much that he watched them every day. One day, he saw a scene in the movie Adieu Galaxy Express 999 that really impressed him. This made him interested in voice acting. After high school, he went to a special school to learn how to be a voice actor.
In 1988, he started his voice acting career in a TV show called Wowser. In 1989, he got his first regular role as Gai, the King Yaksha, in Legend of Heavenly Sphere Shurato. This role was challenging because his character was a villain whose feelings weren't often shown. He had to re-record some lines many times to get them right. Even though he became more known, he felt he wasn't doing his best yet.
Taking on Challenging Roles
Later, in 1990, Koyasu played Minos in an animated video series called Aries. This series was based on a popular comic book. Fans voted for who they wanted to voice the main characters. Koyasu got the most votes for the main character, Hades, because he was known from Shurato. However, since he was still new to the industry, the creators decided to give the main role to someone else. Instead, Koyasu voiced Hades' helper, Minos, who didn't have much screen time.
A big turning point for him was playing Tekkaman Evil (Shinya Aiba) in Tekkaman Blade. Koyasu often says this is his favorite character. He put all his effort into this role, and it helped his career get back on track. He even said that when he first played the character, he thought he was amazing, but looking back later, he realized he had improved a lot since then.
Music and His Own Company
In the late 1990s, Koyasu helped create the Weiß Kreuz media series. He also formed a voice acting group called "Weiß" with his friends and fellow voice actors Shin-ichiro Miki, Tomokazu Seki, and Hiro Yūki. He was the first male voice actor to be on the cover of a voice acting magazine and the first to make a music video. From 2000 to 2001, he also made music under the name ZAZEL.
After working for a company called Production Baobab, Koyasu started his own voice acting agency, T's Factory, in 1998. On his birthday, May 5, 2020, T's Factory launched its official website and Twitter page, sharing his profile with the public.
Working with His Son
In 2020, Koyasu appeared in an advertisement for the Duel Masters with his son, Kōki Koyasu, who is also a voice actor. In April of that year, they even started their own radio show together called "Takehito & Kōki's KOYASU RADIO."
In 2021, he won the Best Actor in Supporting Role award at the 15th Seiyu Awards, which is a big honor for voice actors.
