Geography

Tambo is located in Central West Queensland, Australia. It sits right on the banks of the Barcoo River. The town is about 101 kilometers (63 miles) southeast of Blackall. It is also about 862 kilometers (536 miles) northwest of Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland.

The Barcoo River flows through Tambo. The town is also close to the Grey Range. This range is part of the "Roof of Queensland" section of the Great Dividing Range.

The Landsborough Highway goes through Tambo. This highway is a major road that connects Brisbane to Darwin. Tambo is also linked to Springsure and Alpha by other roads.

History

The land where Tambo is located was originally home to several Aboriginal groups. These included the Wadjaling, Wadjalad, Wadjabangai, and Pitjara peoples.

The first European explorer to visit this area was Sir Thomas Mitchell in 1846. For about 15 years after that, the land was not used by Europeans. Then, in 1861, people started to claim land there.

The town was first started in 1863 and was called Carrangarra. This makes it the oldest town in western Queensland. Like many places in the west, sheep farming became very important for the economy. The town's name was changed to Tambo in 1868. The name Tambo comes from an Indigenous Australian word. It can mean "hidden place," "resting place," or "shady waters."

The first bank branch, the Queensland National Bank, opened in 1875. Tambo State School welcomed its first students on February 28, 1876.

St Mary's Catholic Church was built in 1886. A big storm destroyed it in 1955. A new church, Our Lady of Victories War Memorial Catholic Church, was built on the same spot and opened later that year. The Courthouse was built in 1888.

Tambo was the site of the first fatal accident for Qantas, an Australian airline. An Airco DH.9 plane crashed on March 24, 1927. Three people died when the plane stalled while trying to land.

St Michael's and All Angels Anglican Church first opened in 1912. It was a timber church. A cyclone completely destroyed it in 1938. A new church was finally built and opened in October 1952.

Until 2008, Tambo was the main town for the Shire of Tambo. In 2008, the Queensland Government combined many local government areas. The Shire of Tambo and the Shire of Blackall joined together. Now, Tambo is part of the Blackall-Tambo Region.

Tambo was cut off for eight days during the big Queensland floods of 2010-2011.
