Tanganyika was a country in East Africa. It is now the mainland part of Tanzania. Tanganyika was an independent state from December 9, 1961, to April 26, 1964.
This area is located between the Indian Ocean and some of Africa's largest lakes. These lakes include Lake Victoria, Lake Malawi, and Lake Tanganyika.

A Look at Tanganyika's History
Tanganyika was once part of a bigger colony called German East Africa. This colony also included parts of what are now Rwanda and Burundi. However, it did not include Zanzibar.
From German to British Rule
After World War I, German East Africa was divided. The areas that are now Rwanda and Burundi were given to Belgium. The main part, which became Tanganyika, was given to Britain. This happened under the 1919 Treaty of Versailles.
In 1922, the League of Nations confirmed that Britain would govern this territory. Later, it became a United Nations Trust Territory. Britain then officially named it the Tanganyika Territory.
Becoming an Independent Nation
On December 9, 1961, Tanganyika became an independent country. It was first a Commonwealth realm, which meant the British monarch was still its head of state.
Exactly one year later, on December 9, 1962, Tanganyika became the Republic of Tanganyika. It was still part of the Commonwealth of Nations.
Joining with Zanzibar
In 1964, Tanganyika joined with the islands of Zanzibar. Together, they formed a new country. It was first called the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar.
Later that same year, the name was changed. The new country became known as the United Republic of Tanzania.
Tanganyika Today
The name Tanganyika is no longer used officially for the mainland. However, people still use it informally. It helps to talk about the mainland, which is different from Zanzibar. The name Tanganyika is also used for the large lake, Lake Tanganyika.
