Theodore "Ted" Carlisle Landsmark (born May 17, 1946) is an American teacher and lawyer. He is a respected professor who teaches about cities and public policy at Northeastern University. He also leads the Kitty and Michael Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy there. Ted Landsmark studies many interesting things. These include how design can be more diverse, how to protect old buildings, and how communities can grow stronger. He also researches African American art and crafts.

Ted Landsmark's Journey and Work
Ted Landsmark was born in Kansas City, Missouri. Before starting school, he moved to East Harlem, New York City. He went to Stuyvesant High School in New York and St. Paul's School in New Hampshire.
Education and Early Career
Landsmark earned three degrees from Yale University. These were a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Environmental Design, and a law degree (Juris Doctor). While at Yale, he was a political editor for the Yale Daily News. He was also part of the Aurelian Honor Society. Later, he earned his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Boston University. This degree focused on American and New England Studies. He has also received special grants from the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts and the National Science Foundation.
Leadership and Teaching Roles
Ted Landsmark was the president of Boston Architectural College from 1997 to 2014. He also served as a top academic leader at the American College of the Building Arts. This was from 2015 to 2017. He has taught at several other well-known schools. These include the Massachusetts College of Art, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, and the University of Massachusetts Boston.
Community Involvement in Boston
Landsmark has been a trustee for many arts groups in Boston. He helped guide organizations like the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. He even led the board at the Institute of Contemporary Art. In 2014, the mayor of Boston, Marty Walsh, asked him to join the board of the Boston Planning and Development Agency. This agency helps plan how Boston grows and develops.
The Soiling of Old Glory Photograph
Ted Landsmark is widely known because he is in a famous photograph. The picture is called The Soiling of Old Glory. It was taken by photojournalist Stanley Forman. This photo won a special award, the 1977 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography.

In the 1970s, Boston was going through a difficult time. There were protests about how students were bused to different schools to help end segregation. One day, as Landsmark was going to a meeting, he was met by young protesters. The photograph shows a young white teenager, Joseph Rakes, using a flagpole with the American flag to assault Landsmark.
Before this incident, Landsmark worked as a civil rights lawyer. He mainly helped minority contractors get jobs in construction. After the assault, he started to focus more on the city's busing issues.
