Topo map USGS Tejon Hills

The Tejon Hills are a group of small mountains, also called hills, located in sunny California. You can find them in the southern part of Kern County. These hills are part of a bigger group of mountains known as the Transverse Ranges. The tallest spot in the Tejon Hills is Comanche Mountain, which is about 364 feet (111 meters) high.

These hills are entirely located on land owned by the Tejon Ranch company. A special agreement, called a conservation easement, helps protect this land. It is managed by the Tejon Ranch Conservancy. This helps keep the area natural and safe for plants and animals.

Exploring the Tejon Hills' Location

The Tejon Hills are found right next to the western side of the Tehachapi Mountains. They sit along the edge of the large San Joaquin Valley. Imagine a map: these hills are about 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of the town of Tehachapi.

Where are the Tejon Hills?

The Natural Story of Tejon Hills

The Tejon Hills have an interesting geological past. They are made from old ocean floor sediments that were pushed up over time. This is different from the nearby Tehachapi Mountains. Those mountains are made of igneous rock, which forms when hot magma cools. This type of rock is similar to what you find in the Sierra Nevada mountains to the north.

Soil and Special Plants

The soil in the Tejon Hills is mostly alkaline. This means it has a high pH level. Because of this special soil, some plants can only grow in this area. These plants are called "locally endemic" species. They are unique to the Tejon Hills and are an important part of its natural history.
