Theberton's Past

What Happened During World War I?

During World War I, a large German airship called a Zeppelin was shot down near Theberton. This happened early in the morning of June 17, 1917. The Zeppelin, named L48, was on a bombing mission when it was brought down by British forces.

Most of the crew members died in the crash. The people of Theberton buried the crew in a special area next to the churchyard. Local women even helped dig the graves. For many years, people in the village looked after these graves. In 1966, the bodies were moved to a German military cemetery in Staffordshire. Today, you can still see a memorial plaque across the road from the church, which includes a piece of the Zeppelin.

The Village School

The village primary school in Theberton closed around 1970. The building was then turned into the village hall, a place for community events. In 2000, it was renamed Jubilee Hall, and it was greatly improved in 2012.

Famous People from Theberton

Who Lived at Theberton Hall?

William Light, who helped found the city of Adelaide in South Australia, lived at Theberton Hall as a child. He was sent there from Penang around 1792, when he was about six years old, to be educated by friends of his father.

Theberton Hall was built by George Doughty, who was the Sheriff of Suffolk. His wife, Anne Goodwin, was also from an important family. Their son, Rev. George Clarke Doughty, also lived at Theberton Hall.

Charles Montagu Doughty (1843–1926), a famous traveler and writer, was born at Theberton Hall. He is best known for his book Travels in Arabia Deserta. There is a plaque in the church to remember him. His nephew, Lt-Col. Charles Doughty-Wylie, was also born at Theberton Hall in 1868. He was a very brave soldier who died in battle in Gallipoli in 1915. He was given the Victoria Cross, a very high award for bravery, after his death.

Who Was Robert Howlett?

The famous Victorian photographer Robert Howlett was born in Theberton in 1831. He is well-known for his iconic photograph of the engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Important Buildings

What is Theberton Hall Like?

Theberton Hall was built in 1780 or 1792. It was changed a lot in 1852 to look more like Italian Renaissance style, but most of these additions were taken down in the 1920s.

Today, it is a two-story building made of yellow brick and stone. The main entrance has a porch with square pillars. Above the entrance, there is a special saying: "PALMA NON SINE PVLVERE," which means "no reward without effort." Theberton Hall is considered a Grade II heritage-listed building, meaning it is an important historical site.

In 1928, the family who owned Theberton Hall offered to give it and the surrounding land to the city of Adelaide, Australia. This was to honor the friendship between their family and William Light's family. However, the building needed a lot of repairs, so Adelaide decided not to accept the offer.

Village Connections

How is Theberton Connected to Australia?

Theberton has a special connection with Thebarton, a suburb of Adelaide in South Australia. The two places are "twinned," which means they have a friendly link. Thebarton was named after William Light's home in Australia, which he called Theberton House, linking it back to this village in Suffolk.
