Thorrington is a small village in Essex, England. It is part of the Tendring area. The village is about 5 kilometers (3 miles) east of Wivenhoe and 3 kilometers (2 miles) north of Brightlingsea.

Thorrington has a beautiful old church made of flint stone. It is called Mary Magdalene Church. In 2011, about 1258 people lived in Thorrington.

The village is very old and was mentioned in the Domesday Book. This was a big survey of England made in 1086. In the Domesday Book, Thorrington was called "Torinduna." Over the years, its name has changed many times, like Turituna, Thorinton, and Thurrington.

Geography of Thorrington

Thorrington is surrounded by water features. On its west side, the Tenpenny Brook forms the border between Thorrington and Alresford.

Thorrington Tide Mill

Where the Tenpenny Brook meets the Alresford Creek, you can find the Thorrington Mill. This mill is special because it is a tide mill. This means it uses the power of the tides to work! It was built in 1831 and is now a Grade II* listed building. This means it is a very important historic building.

The eastern and northern edges of Thorrington are bordered by the Saltwater Brook. There used to be another tide mill where the Saltwater Brook flows into Flag Creek.

Village Layout and Transport

Today, the main village of Thorrington is almost connected to a smaller area called Thorrington Cross. Thorrington Cross has different shops, small businesses, and houses built between the two World Wars. It is located where two main roads, the B1029 (to Brightlingsea) and the B1027 (from Wivenhoe to Clacton), meet.

The Colchester to Clacton railway line runs just north of the village. Thorrington used to have its own train station, which opened in 1867. However, it closed in 1957. Now, the closest train station is Great Bentley station, which is about 2 miles northeast of Thorrington.

Local Schools

The main primary school for children in Thorrington is Great Bentley Primary School. This school also serves nearby areas like Great Bentley, Frating, Little Bentley, and Aingers Green. It teaches around 210 boys and girls aged 4 to 11.

Great Bentley Primary School was built in 1896. It had some rebuilding work done in 2003, but its historic front was kept. The school has a "good" rating from its latest Ofsted inspection, which checks how well schools are doing.

Thorrington in New Zealand

Did you know there's a connection between Thorrington and New Zealand? An estate agent named Charles Clark moved from England to Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1856.

In 1860, he built a large house in Christchurch and named it "Thorrington." It had big gardens next to the Heathcote River. Many parties were held there! Charles Clark lived in this house until he died in 1906.

Because of his house, a road in the area was named Thorrington Road, and a primary school was named Thorrington School. The original "Thorrington" estate in New Zealand was very large, about 52 acres. It was later divided up into smaller plots of land, and the house was taken down in the late 1930s.
