The Thouet is a river in western France. It flows through two areas called departments: Deux-Sèvres and Maine-et-Loire. These departments are part of two larger regions: Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Pays de la Loire.

The Thouet is one of the last rivers that joins the Loire from its left side.

About the Thouet River

The Thouet river is about 142.5 kilometers (88.5 miles) long. It has a drainage basin of around 3,282 square kilometers (1,267 square miles). A drainage basin is the area of land where all the water flows into that river.

The River's Journey

The Thouet river begins in a flat, high area called the Gâtine plateau. This is in the western part of the Deux-Sèvres department. Its source is in the town of Le Beugnon, near Secondigny. It starts at a height of about 223 meters (732 feet) above sea level.

From its start to the town of Parthenay, the river flows mostly from southwest to northwest. East of Parthenay, the river changes direction. For the rest of its journey, it flows mainly north.

Finally, the Thouet river flows into the Loire river in the city of Saumur.

The Thouet river flows through 2 regions, 2 departments, and 34 towns or communes. Here are some of the main ones:
