A Look at Tinmouth's History
Tinmouth was first set up in 1761. This area was known as the New Hampshire Grants back then. When the first U.S. census happened in 1790, Tinmouth had 935 people.
The town's population grew to its largest in 1820. After that, the number of people living in Tinmouth slowly went down for 150 years. It reached its lowest point in 1970 with only 268 residents. By the year 2000, the population grew again to 567. This was the first time since 1880 that more than 500 people lived in Tinmouth.
In 2007, the people of Tinmouth had a big discussion. They talked about changing how they voted in town meetings. They decided to switch to a different voting system called the Australian ballot. This change was decided after two close votes.

Tinmouth covers about 28.4 square miles (73.6 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a very small part, about 0.1 square miles (0.3 square kilometers), is water.
A large part of Tinmouth's land is protected. About 40% of the town's land cannot be built on. This is thanks to something called a conservation easement. These agreements help keep the land natural. Some of this protected land is managed by the Vermont Land Trust. Other parts are state land that protects the Tinmouth Channel Wildlife Management Area.

The Tinmouth School teaches children from Pre-K up to 6th grade. In 2008, there were 54 students. Sometimes, different grades share a classroom. After 6th grade, students usually go to Mill River Middle School. Then they go to Mill River Union High School.
Tinmouth is part of the Mill River Unified Union School District. This district includes several towns. Around 2013, Tinmouth joined the Rutland South supervisory union. Before this, students could choose which high school to attend for free. Most chose Mill River. Now, after the school districts merged, students must attend the high school in their district.
