School History

Tomball High School has a long and interesting history. It started small and grew over many years.

Early Beginnings (1908-1930s)

  • In 1908, the first school in Tomball opened. It was a one-room building.
  • About 15 students attended classes there.
  • The community decided to build a proper school.
  • Land was given on Cherry Street.
  • By 1910, a new two-story brick schoolhouse was ready.
  • It had two classrooms and an upstairs auditorium.
  • By 1916, 62 students were going to this school.
  • By 1928, Tomball had four schools.
  • In 1931, the school district had five teachers.

New Buildings and District Growth (1935-1970s)

  • In 1935, the old schoolhouse was replaced.
  • A new brick building was built for grades one through eleven.
  • In 1937, Tomball got its own school district. It was named the Tomball Independent School District.
  • The school on Cherry Street became very crowded.
  • So, in 1938, a new high school was built on Main Street.
  • This new building had a gymnasium and a swimming pool.

Fire and Rebuilding (1961-Present)

  • In 1961, the high school on Main Street caught fire.
  • An electrical fire in the attic destroyed the building.
  • Firefighters used water from the swimming pool to put out the fire.
  • School was closed for four days.
  • Local churches and businesses helped by offering their spaces. This allowed students to finish the school year.
  • By 1974, students moved into the current Tomball High School.
  • This new school is located on Quinn Road.
  • As the community grew, more classrooms were needed.
  • In 2000, voters approved money to update Tomball High School.
  • The school was remodeled again in 2005.
  • A statue of the school's mascot, a cougar, was donated.
  • In 2021, money was raised for a new cougar statue.
  • Chris Scott is the current principal of Tomball High School.
