Transcontinental country facts for kids
A transcontinental country is a nation that has land in more than one continent. It's like a country that stretches across two or even three big landmasses! This happens because the borders of continents aren't always clear, or because a country owns islands or territories far away from its main land.

Countries Across Continents
Some countries are famous for being transcontinental. Let's look at a few examples and see why they fit this description.
Africa and Asia
* Egypt is mostly in North Africa, but it also has a part called the Sinai Peninsula. This peninsula is actually located in Asia. So, Egypt connects these two huge continents!
Asia and Europe
Many countries are located where Europe and Asia meet. This area is often called Eurasia.
* Cyprus is an island nation in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Geographically, it's closer to Asia, but it's often considered part of Europe culturally and politically.
* Georgia is a country in the Caucasus region. Part of its land is in Eastern Europe, and another part is in Western Asia.
* Kazakhstan is a very large country. Most of its land is in Central Asia, but a small western part of it crosses into Eastern Europe.
* Russia is the largest country in the world by land area. A huge part of Russia is in Eastern Europe, and the rest, which is even bigger, stretches across Northern Asia. The Ural Mountains are often seen as the natural border between its European and Asian parts.
* Turkey is mostly located in Western Asia, on a peninsula called Anatolia. However, a small but very important part of Turkey, including the city of Istanbul, is in Southeastern Europe. This European part is called Thrace.
Asia and Australasia
* Indonesia is a country made up of many islands. While most of its islands are in Southeast Asia, it also controls large islands like New Guinea (specifically, the western part of it, called West Papua). These islands are considered part of Australasia (which is sometimes called Oceania).
America and Oceania
* The main part of the United States is in North America. However, the state of Hawaii is located far away in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, which is part of Oceania. This makes the U.S. a transcontinental country.
America, Oceania, and Antarctica
* Chile is a long, narrow country on the western coast of South America. * It also owns Easter Island, a famous island located far out in the Pacific Ocean, making it part of Oceania. * Additionally, Chile claims a part of Antarctica called the Chilean Antarctic Territory. While this claim is not recognized by all countries, it means Chile considers itself present on three continents!
Debated Transcontinental Countries
Sometimes, whether a country is transcontinental can be a bit debated. This often happens when a country owns very small islands or territories that are geographically located on a different continent, even if the main part of the country is not.
- For example, Spain is a European country, but it controls the Canary Islands. These islands are located off the coast of Africa and are geologically part of the African continent. This makes Spain an interesting case for being transcontinental.
