Tucumán is the smallest of the provinces in Argentina. It is located in the northwest part of the country. Its capital city is San Miguel de Tucumán, which people often just call Tucumán.

The province is known by the nickname El Jardín de la República (The Garden of the Republic). This is because it is a very productive farming area.

Exploring Tucumán's Geography

The province of Tucumán covers an area of 22,524 square kilometers (8,697 sq mi). It is surrounded by other provinces:

Tucumán has two main types of land. The eastern part is flat, like the Gran Chaco plains. The western part has a mix of mountains, similar to the Pampas in the south, and deep valleys (canyons) in the north.

The highest peak in Tucumán is the Cerro del Bolsón. It is close to the border with the Catamarca province. This mountain is 5,550 meters (18,209 ft) high.

The main river in the province is the Dulce River. When it flows through Tucumán, it is also called the Salí river.

Tucumán's Climate

San Miguel de Tucumán is about 449 meters (1,473 ft) above sea level. It has a humid subtropical climate. This means it has hot, humid summers and mild winters.

The average temperature in San Miguel de Tucumán for the whole year is 19.3°C (66.7°F). January is usually the warmest month, with an average temperature of 25.3°C (77.5°F). July is the coolest month, with an average temperature of 12.1°C (53.8°F).

The province gets about 1,013.5 millimeters (39.9 in) of rain each year. January is the wettest month, with an average of 210.8 millimeters (8.3 in) of rain. July is the driest month, with only about 10.2 millimeters (0.4 in) of rain.

Tucumán's Population

People who live in Tucumán are called Tucumanos (or Tucumanas for women) in Spanish.

In 2010, the province of Tucumán had 1,448,188 people living there. This means there were about 64.3 people per square kilometer (166.5 per sq mi).

Tucumán has four important universities:

  1. Universidad Nacional de Tucumán (National University of Tucumán). This is a public university.
  2. Facultad Regional Tucumán, which is part of the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional (National Technological University). This university focuses on technology.
  3. Universidad del Norte Santo Tomás de Aquino (Saint Thomas Aquinas University of the North). This is a private university.
  4. Universidad San Pablo-T (Saint Paul-T University). This is also a private university.
