History of Tyresö
The first people came to the area that is now Tyresö Municipality around 5,000 years ago. However, people didn't start living there permanently until about the 7th century AD. You can still find old graves and other signs from these early times.
The Tyresö estate began in the 1300s. By the 1600s, it was very large, covering almost all of the area that is Tyresö Municipality today. The beautiful Tyresö Palace was finished in 1636, and Tyresö Church was built in 1640.
Between the 1500s and 1800s, Tyresö was an important place for industry in the Stockholm area. This was because of the many watermills that could be built on the streams between the lakes. The waterwheels on the municipality's coat of arms show the three main water power sites. These industries included places that made metal, ground grain, made paper, cut wood, and made bricks.
Today, none of the old watermills are left. The Uddby mill burned down in 1895. A hydroelectric power plant was built in its place, which still works today. It is the only power plant of its kind in the Stockholm area.
In the early 1900s, the large Tyresö estate started to be divided into smaller pieces of land. People began building summer cottages there. Some very fancy ones were built in the Brevik area. More and more homes were built quickly in the first few decades of the century. From the 1950s, many of these summer cottages were changed into homes for year-round living.
Starting in the 1950s, the area of Bollmora grew very fast. This was especially true after a law called Lex Bollmora was passed in 1959. This law allowed town-owned housing companies to build in other towns. A town center, Bollmora Centrum, was opened in 1965. Many of the apartment buildings in Bollmora were built during the "Million Programme," a large housing project in Sweden.
Because of all this growth, the number of people living in Tyresö has increased a lot. From about 5,000 people in the 1950s, it has grown to over 44,000 today.
In the early 1990s, Bollmora Centrum was rebuilt into an indoor shopping center and renamed Tyresö Centrum.
In August 1999, a large wildfire burned about 10% of the Tyresta National Park.
