Upper Sandusky is a city in Ohio, United States. It is the main city, or county seat, of Wyandot County. The city is located along the upper part of the Sandusky River.

Upper Sandusky is about 59 miles (95 km) south of Toledo. It is also about 62 miles (100 km) north of Columbus. In 2020, the city had a population of 6,698 people.

The city was started in 1843. It was named after an older village of the Wyandot people that was nearby. It is called "Upper" because it is close to where the Sandusky River begins. The river then flows into Lake Erie.

History of Upper Sandusky

Early Native American Village

The area of Upper Sandusky was once a very important town for the Wyandot people in the 1800s. It was named for its spot at the start of the Sandusky River in northwestern Ohio. This was the main Wyandot town during the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783). It was sometimes called Half-King's Town. This name came from Dunquat, who was a Wyandot leader known as the "Half-King."

The town and other nearby settlements, like Captain Pipe's Town, were close friends with the British. The British had a fort called Fort Detroit. In 1782, during the Crawford expedition, soldiers from Pennsylvania tried to destroy the town. This was because the Wyandot people had started attacking American settlers. However, the soldiers were stopped before they reached the town.

Forming the Western Confederacy

After the Revolutionary War, in September 1783, many Native American groups met at Upper Sandusky. They formed a group called the Western Confederacy. This group wanted to stop the United States from expanding into the Northwest Territory. This led to a conflict known as the Northwest Indian War.

War of 1812 and Fort Ferree

During the War of 1812, the village became the location of Fort Ferree. This fort was built on a high area overlooking the Sandusky River. Pennsylvania soldiers built the fort in late 1812. They were led by Lieutenant Colonel Joel Ferree. General William Henry Harrison had ordered them to build it.

Wyandot Grand Reserve and Removal

Upper Sandusky became part of the Wyandot Grand Reserve. This was a special area for the Wyandot people. It was created by the Treaty of Fort Meigs in 1817. Before that, the area was part of Native American lands in northwestern Ohio. This land was above the Greenville Treaty line of 1795.

Many Wyandot people lived in their settlements here until 1842. At that time, they were forced to leave because of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. They moved to what is now Wyandotte County, Kansas. A small group of free Black people also lived in the old village.

Founding the Modern City

A new town of Upper Sandusky was planned near the old Wyandot village in 1843. The first house for settlers was built in 1845. The first public building in the new town was the county jail in 1846. Upper Sandusky was chosen as the main city for Wyandot County in 1848.
