Vaulion is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Jura-Nord Vaudois area of the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. It is known for its beautiful natural surroundings and quiet way of life.

Exploring Vaulion's Past
Vaulion has a long history. It was first mentioned in official records way back in 1097. At that time, it was called Vallis Leonis. Later, in 1160, its name changed to Valleuni, and by 1316, it was known as Vaulion, which is the name it still has today.
Vaulion's Location and Land
Vaulion covers an area of about 13.2 square kilometers (5.1 sq mi). A large part of this land, almost half (48.3%), is used for farming. Another big part (48.5%) is covered by forests.
A smaller portion of the land (3.2%) has buildings and roads. A tiny bit (0.2%) is made up of rivers or lakes. The rest (0.2%) is land that cannot be used for farming or building.
Most of the forested land (44.3% of the total area) is dense forest. The municipality used to be part of the Orbe District. However, in 2006, it became part of the new Jura-Nord Vaudois district. Vaulion is also located close to the Nozon river.
Vaulion's Coat of Arms
The blazon (official description) of Vaulion's coat of arms is quite unique. It shows a red letter "V" on a silver background. Above the "V", there are three deer (called "Harts") in green, red, and gold colors, spreading out like rays.

Vaulion is a small community. As of 2022, it has a population of 505 people. Over the past ten years (1999–2009), the population has stayed pretty stable.
Most people in Vaulion (about 92.7%) speak French. Some people also speak German (3.7%) or Portuguese (1.4%).
The age groups in Vaulion vary. In 2009, about 9.6% of the population were children aged 0-9. Teenagers (10-19 years old) made up about 11.9%. Adults between 20 and 59 years old made up a larger portion of the population. Older adults (60 and above) made up about 22.3% of the population.

Learning and Education
Education is important in Vaulion. About 35.5% of the population has finished upper secondary education, which is like high school. About 8.7% have gone on to complete higher education, such as university.
In the 2009/2010 school year, there were 45 students in the Vaulion school district. The local school system provides two years of optional pre-school. Primary school lasts for four years, and there were 23 students in the municipal primary school program. The required lower secondary school program lasts for six years, with 21 students attending these schools.
