L'Abbaye is a municipality in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland. It is located in the Jura-Nord Vaudois district. This town is found in the beautiful Vallée de Joux (Joux Valley). Its name comes from an old monastery called Lac de Joux Abbey.

History of L'Abbaye
L'Abbaye became its own independent town in 1571. Before that, it was part of another municipality called Le Lieu.
Geography and Location
L'Abbaye covers an area of about 31.88 square kilometers (12.31 square miles). A large part of this land, about 60.7%, is covered by forests. Another 34% is used for farming.
The town itself, including buildings and roads, makes up about 3.7% of the area. Lakes and rivers cover 1% of the land.
L'Abbaye is located on the eastern shore of Lac de Joux, a beautiful lake. The town sits at an elevation of about 1000 to 1600 meters (3,280 to 5,250 feet). It is right in the middle of the Vallée de Joux, within the Jura mountains. The municipality also includes the smaller villages of Les Bioux and Le Pont.

The coat of arms for L'Abbaye is quite unique. It features a black bear's head with a silver outline. This bear head is placed on a red banner that has three golden scallop shells.
Population and People
L'Abbaye has a population of about 1,243 people (as of 2003). Over the last ten years (1999–2009), the population has grown by about 4.1%. This growth mostly comes from people moving into the area.
Most people in L'Abbaye speak French, which is 94% of the population. A smaller number of people speak German (2.5%) or Portuguese (1.5%).
Many residents were born in L'Abbaye or elsewhere in the same canton (Vaud). About 15.3% of the population was born outside of Switzerland.
