Vladimír Čech (born July 6, 1951 – died March 22, 2013) was a famous Czech actor, TV host, and even a politician for a short time. He was born and passed away in Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic. His mother, Heda Čechová, was a well-known TV anchor, and his father, Vladimír Čech Sr., was also an actor.

Early Life and Acting Career

Vladimír Čech loved acting from a young age. In 1977, he finished his studies at the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts. After graduating, he started performing in many different theatres across the Czech Republic.

He acted in places like the Petr Bezruč Theatre in Ostrava and the Silesian Theatre in Opava. He also performed at the Moravian Theatre in Olomouc and the East Bohemia Theatre in Pardubice. He played many different characters in plays by famous writers.

Famous Theatre Roles

Vladimír Čech was known for his amazing performances on stage. He played important roles in many classic plays. For example, he was Edmund in King Lear and Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet. He also appeared in Hamlet and played Antony in Antony and Cleopatra. Another big role was Iago in Othello. These are all very famous plays by William Shakespeare.

TV Host and Voice Actor

Besides his theatre work, Vladimír Čech became very popular on television. From 1999, he worked as a freelance actor, meaning he wasn't tied to one theatre company.

Hosting Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

One of his most famous jobs was hosting the Czech version of the popular TV show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?. The show was called Chcete být milionářem? in Czech. He hosted it until September 2003 and became a very recognizable face on Czech TV. Between 2001 and 2003, people even voted him the most popular TV competition host in the TýTý awards.

Vladimír Čech also hosted another TV program on ČT called Barvy života (Colors of Life). In 2008, Česká televize made a special documentary series with him called Na vrcholky hor s Vladimírem Čechem (To the Mountain Peaks with Vladimír Čech). In this show, he explored beautiful mountain areas.

Voice Acting and Dubbing

Vladimír Čech had a very distinctive voice. He was well-known for his voice-over work, which is called dubbing. He lent his voice to many cartoon characters and films. His most famous voice role was the title character in the cartoons and movies about Garfield, the lazy orange cat.

Vladimír Čech passed away on March 22, 2013, at the age of 61. He had been battling a serious illness called Lynch syndrome, which can lead to certain types of cancer. He also suffered from pneumonia.
