Wan Mokhtar bin Wan Ahmad (born March 21, 1932 – died September 21, 2020) was an important Malaysian politician. He served as the 11th Menteri Besar of Terengganu. A Menteri Besar is like the chief minister or head of government for a state in Malaysia.
Wan Mokhtar held this top position in Terengganu for 25 years, from 1974 to 1999. This makes him the longest-serving leader of the Terengganu state government. He was also a Member of Parliament (MP) for Kemaman from 1964 to 1974. An MP is someone elected to represent people in the national parliament. Later, he became a Member of the Terengganu State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Cukai from 1974 to 1999. An MLA represents people in the state's local assembly.
Wan Mokhtar was a member of a political party called the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). This party was part of the main ruling groups at the time, first the Alliance Party and then the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition. He was a close friend and supporter of Mahathir Mohamad, who was Malaysia's longest-serving Prime Minister. In 1987, Wan Mokhtar was chosen as a vice-president of UMNO.
His time as a powerful state leader ended in the 1999 state election. In this election, the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), which was the opposition, won by a lot. They took over the state government from Barisan Nasional. Wan Mokhtar also lost his own seat in Cukai during that election. After his political career in Terengganu, he was appointed as Malaysia's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. He served in this role from 2000 to 2005. An ambassador represents their country in another country.
