Wardley's name comes from old English words. Weard means "ward" or "protection," and leāh means "clearing" or "wood." So, Wardley means "clearing by a fort." This name was first written down as Weardeleige way back in 1148.

Major Roads
The A580, also known as the "East Lancashire Road," goes right through Wardley. This road connects to the M61 motorway, which actually starts in Wardley. A motorway is a big highway designed for fast travel.
The M60 motorway also runs through the area. This is a major ring road that goes around Greater Manchester.
The A6 road, sometimes called Manchester Road, is another important route here.

In the past, Wardley had three public houses, which are like local pubs: the Morning Star, the Red Lion, and the Brook Tavern. The Brook Tavern has now closed and has been turned into a small Tesco store, which is a supermarket. The Morning Star pub is still open and is run by Joseph Holt's Brewery.
Wardley Hall and Cemetery
Wardley Hall is a very old and important building. It is the home of the Roman Catholic bishop of Salford. Next to Wardley Hall, you'll find St Mary's Catholic Cemetery, also known as Wardley Cemetery.
Industrial Estate
The Wardley Industrial Estate is an area where many businesses and factories are located. It sits between the A6 (Manchester Road) and the A580 East Lancashire Road.
