What Is the Washington Light Infantry?

The Washington Light Infantry (WLI) is a historic organization. It combines military traditions with social activities. It has been around for over 200 years.

Why Was It Formed?

After the American Revolutionary War, there was still tension with Great Britain. Many Americans worried about another war. Because of this, people in cities like Charleston created their own local defense groups. The Washington Light Infantry was one of these groups. It was named after George Washington, a famous American leader.

Early Service and Important Gifts

The WLI was first called into action during the War of 1812. However, British troops did not invade South Carolina, so the group did not fight. In 1827, the wife of Colonel William Washington gave the company his old battle flag from the Revolutionary War. This was a very special gift.

Major Conflicts and Contributions

The Washington Light Infantry has served in many important wars. They have helped protect the United States and its interests.

Fighting in the Seminole Wars

In 1836, the company was sent to Florida. Their mission was to fight against the Seminole people during the Seminole Wars. They helped guard the city of St. Augustine.

Helping to Create The Citadel

Six years later, the WLI played a role in starting the South Carolina Military Academy. Today, this school is known as The Citadel. It is a well-known military college.

Service in the Mexican War

During the Mexican–American War, the company joined the Palmetto Regiment. They marched into Mexico City as part of General Winfield Scott's army. This was a big moment in their history.

The American Civil War

When South Carolina decided to leave the Union in early 1861, the Washington Light Infantry changed. It split into three different companies. These companies then served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. One of these companies became Company A of the Hampton Legion. A total of 414 men from the WLI served in the war. Sadly, 114 of them died.

After the Civil War

After the war ended, the soldiers who survived came home. They helped to reopen the military academy in 1882, which had been closed. They also created the Washington Light Infantry Charitable Association. This group helped the families of soldiers who had died. It also helped men who were injured or disabled during their service. This charity still exists today as the W.L.I. Charity Fund.

Modern Era Service

The WLI continued to serve the country in the 20th century. They took part in major world conflicts.

World War I and Border Duty

In 1916, the unit was called to duty again. They served as border guards near El Paso, Texas, along the border with Mexico. This was at the request of President Woodrow Wilson. A year later, the United States entered World War I. The WLI then served overseas in the United States Army. They were part of the 105th Ammunition Train.

Becoming Part of the National Guard

After World War I, the National Guard was reorganized. Many state military groups were given new names. The Washington Light Infantry became Company B of the 118th Infantry, South Carolina National Guard. In May 1921, the unit guarded ships and docks. This was during a disagreement between sailors and shipping companies about wages.

World War II Home Front

During World War II, some parts of the National Guard went overseas. However, Company A was brought back to help with guard duty at home. They helped protect important places within the United States.

Traditions and Legacy

The Washington Light Infantry continues to honor its long history. They keep some traditions alive today.

Annual Banquet

Every year, on February 22nd, a special military banquet is held in Charleston. This date is chosen because it is George Washington's Birthday. It is a way to remember the group's history and its namesake.
