History of Cummings Township
Cummings Township was created in 1832. It was formed from parts of two other townships, Mifflin and Brown. The township was named after John Cummings, who was a judge in the local court system at that time.
Early Life and Industries
Long ago, the areas around Little Pine Creek and Pine Creek were hunting grounds for Native American tribes. These included the Iroquois and Algonkian tribes. Some historians think there might have been a Shawnee village and burial ground near Little Pine State Park.
Later, people came to the area to work in the lumber industry. They cut down large white pine and hemlock trees. These trees were then sent down Pine Creek to sawmills in Williamsport. The first sawmill in the Little Pine area was built in 1809 by James and John English. A village called English Mills grew around these sawmills. The lumber business here lasted until 1909.
Waterville Village
Waterville is the main village in Cummings Township. Michael and Henry Wolf arrived here in 1817. They helped start Waterville by building a sawmill and clearing land for farming. A post office opened in Waterville in 1849. Early businesses also included stores and a hotel, which is still there today.
State Parks and Forests
The land that became Tiadaghton State Forest was bought by the state in the early 1900s. The spot for Upper Pine Bottom State Park was once a public campground in 1924. During the Great Depression, a group called the Civilian Conservation Corps built a picnic shelter there in 1936. This park officially became a state park in 1962.
