West Concord is a city in Dodge County, Minnesota, United States. It is a small community with a motto of "A Proud Heritage; A Bright Future." In 2020, about 861 people lived in West Concord.

History of West Concord

West Concord was officially planned and mapped out in 1885. Many of the first people who settled in this area came from places like New England, New York, or Pennsylvania. The city, along with the surrounding Concord Township, was named after Concord, New Hampshire. A post office has been open in West Concord since it was founded in 1885.

Geography and Location

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city covers a total area of about 1.06 square miles (2.75 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

Minnesota State Highway 56 runs through the city, going north and south. Dodge County Road 24 also passes through the northern part of the city, going east and west. These roads help people travel in and out of West Concord.

West Concord in 2010

Based on the census from 2010, there were 782 people living in West Concord. These people lived in 319 households, and 215 of these were families.

Most of the people living in the city were White (93.0%). A small number of residents were from other backgrounds, including African American, Native American, or a mix of two or more races. About 8.1% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.

Out of the 319 households, about 34% had children under 18 living with them. More than half (51%) were married couples living together. About 28% of all households were made up of people living alone. Roughly 13% of these individuals were 65 years old or older.

The average age of people in the city was 36.2 years. About 27% of residents were under 18, and 16.6% were 65 or older. The population was almost evenly split between males (50.9%) and females (49.1%).

West Concord High School used to have the Cardinal as its mascot, and its school colors were red and white.

In 1990, West Concord's school district joined with the towns of Dodge Center, MN and Claremont, MN. Together, they formed the Triton Public Schools. West Concord's old high school building became Triton Junior High. Today, Dodge Center is home to Triton Primary, Triton Middle School, and Triton Senior High School. The first graduation ceremony for Triton High School happened in 1991.

The Triton school mascot is the Cobra, and their school colors are maroon and gray. The annual yearbook is called Triton Tradition, and the first one was published in 1991.

A new school, West Concord Public Charter School, opened in July 2012 and welcomed students in the fall of 2013. It was a free public school. However, it closed four years later because not enough students enrolled.
