People first started settling in the Westville area around the year 1800. The town of Westville was officially created in 1829. It was formed from a part of the town of Constable.

Westville has always been mainly a farming community. The northern part of the town has rich clay soils, while the southern part has sandy soils. The Salmon River flows through the town. This river was very important for early industries and farming.

In the 1800s, many Scottish and English people moved to Westville. They came from Vermont and other parts of New England. The only churches in the community were Protestant. These included the Presbyterian Church at Westville Corners and the Methodist-Episcopal church at Westville Center.

Around the time of the Civil War, many French Canadians moved to northern New York. Some of them started farming in Westville. In the 1800s and early 1900s, Westville had several small businesses. These included a gristmill (for grinding grain), a butter factory, a starch factory, and several sawmills. Most of these businesses were built along the Salmon River. Over time, these industries closed down. Today, farming remains the main economic activity in Westville.

Geography of Westville

The northern border of Westville is also the international border with Canada. Specifically, it borders the province of Quebec.

The town covers a total area of about 90.2 square kilometers (34.8 square miles). Only a very small part of this area, about 0.04 square kilometers (0.01 square miles), is water.

New York State Route 37 crosses New York State Route 122 in an area called Westville Center. The Salmon River, which eventually flows into the St. Lawrence River, runs northward through the town.
