Early Days and Mail Routes
From 1858 to 1861, a famous mail service called the Butterfield Overland Mail used White's Westview Inn. This inn was a stop known as "Diamond Station." It was part of a long route that carried mail from the Mississippi River all the way to the Pacific Coast. In 1860, a post office opened in the settlement. It was called "Whitesborough" back then.

After the American Civil War, Whitesborough grew into a busy frontier town. It was a wild place where safety was sometimes a concern. On June 2, 1873, Whitesborough officially became a city. It had about 500 people, along with stores and other businesses.
By 1879, the city had a bank and its own newspaper. It also got train service from Denison. This train line was part of the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad. In 1887, the city changed the spelling of its name to "Whitesboro," which is how it's spelled today.
