Yerbas Buenas' Rich History and Culture

Yerbas Buenas is a town with a lot of history and a special cultural feel. It has many buildings that show a unique Spanish-style architecture. The town is a great example of how old colonial buildings from the time when Spain ruled Chile have been kept safe. This is quite rare in Chile. You can walk down whole streets where all the buildings are from the colonial period.

The Historical Museum of Yerbas Buenas

The Historical Museum of Yerbas Buenas is in a very old colonial building. This building is important because it saw the beginning of Chile's fight for independence.

On April 26, 1813, a Spanish general named Antonio Pareja stayed in this house. He was the leader of the royalist army, which supported the King of Spain. The very next day, a big battle happened between his army and the patriot army, who wanted Chile to be free. This was one of the first major battles in the Chilean War of Independence. During this battle, the patriot leader, Juan de Dios Puga, was killed, along with one-third of his soldiers.

Because of its importance, this building was named a "National Historic Monument" on August 22, 1984. The area around the museum has also been named a "Typical Zone" (Zona típica), meaning it's a special historical area.

How Yerbas Buenas is Governed

As a commune, Yerbas Buenas is managed by a local government called a municipal council. The head of this council is the Mayor, who is chosen by the people every four years. The current Mayor, elected for 2024-2028, is Jonathan Norambuena. He is an independent politician.

The municipal council also has several members who help the Mayor run the commune. These members are:

  • José Parra Parada
  • Rodrigo González Villalobos
  • Flavio Hernán Ramos Gutiérrez
  • Cristina Zehender Soto
  • Michael Mendez Gonzalez
  • Cristián Patricio Fuentealba Retamal

Yerbas Buenas is also part of larger political areas for national elections. For example, it is part of an electoral district that chooses members for the Chamber of Deputies (like a parliament). It is also part of a larger area that chooses members for the Senate.
