The Story of Heart

This story takes place a long, long time ago, during the Late Cretaceous Period. It's a time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

A Special Family

A kind female Maiasaura dinosaur finds a lost egg. She decides to adopt it and takes it to her nest. One day, dangerous Troodon attack the nesting grounds. The mother Maiasaura loses most of her eggs, but saves two. One egg hatches into a baby Maiasaura named Light. The other egg, the one she found, hatches into a baby Tyrannosaurus! She names him Heart.

The other Maiasaura are scared of Heart because he's a Tyrannosaurus. They want to get rid of him. But Heart's adoptive mother protects him. She decides to leave her herd to raise Heart and Light safely in the forest. Heart grows up eating berries, not knowing he's a meat-eater.

One day, Heart and Light meet a sloth who sings about scary Tyrannosaurus. The sloth gets scared of Heart, and Light jokes that Heart looks like the description. This makes Heart sad and confused about who he really is.

Discovering His True Self

Heart can't get enough food from berries. He leaves the forest to find more to eat. He sees a big Tyrannosaurus named Baku fight and defeat a Triceratops. Heart gets scared, not realizing he is also a Tyrannosaurus. Another Tyrannosaurus, Gonza, notices Heart smells like a plant-eater.

Heart runs away and tells Light about the scary Tyrannosaurus. But Gonza appears and threatens Light. Light shouts for Heart to save himself. Gonza is surprised that a Maiasaura would care for a Tyrannosaurus. Light explains Heart is his brother. Gonza then tells Heart his true species. Heart doesn't believe it and attacks Gonza, biting off his tail. When Heart eats the tail, he realizes Gonza was telling the truth. He can't control his meat-eating instincts. Heart runs away to protect his family.

Meeting Umasou

Years pass, and Heart is now a strong adult Tyrannosaurus. He's very skilled at hunting. One day, Heart finds an Ankylosaurus egg. When the baby hatches, Heart calls him "Umasou," which means "delicious" in Japanese. Heart plans to eat him later. But the baby Ankylosaurus thinks Heart is his dad and that "Umasou" is his name! Heart is surprised and confused.

Heart decides to raise Umasou, at first still thinking he might eat him later. But after a bad dream about his old family, Heart starts to change his mind. Umasou loves Heart very much, but Heart struggles to show his feelings.

One day, a Chilantaisaurus tries to eat Umasou. Heart quickly saves him. Another time, Umasou goes off to find berries for Heart. Heart gets worried when he can't find Umasou. When Umasou returns, Heart yells at him. But then he sees the berries and apologizes. Umasou tells Heart he got the berries from an old Tyrannosaurus named Bekon. Bekon tells Heart about Baku, the king of the plains, who got his scar fighting many dangerous Giganotosaurus. Bekon also makes Heart think about Umasou's future. Heart decides to train Umasou to protect himself.

Facing Dangers Together

Even though they spend good times together, Heart still worries about Umasou finding out the truth. He tricks Umasou into a race, saying if Umasou wins, they'll stay together forever. Heart lets Umasou run ahead, hoping he'll run away. But Umasou runs into Gonza's pack, who try to hurt him.

Heart rushes to save Umasou. He defeats Gonza's gang with his fighting skills, keeping Umasou safe in his mouth. Baku sees what Heart did and banishes Heart from the plains. Heart is relieved that Umasou is safe. Umasou realizes Heart didn't catch him during the race. Heart finally accepts Umasou as his son. They leave the plains to find a new home. Meanwhile, Bekon talks to Baku, hinting that Heart might be Baku's lost son.

Months later, Heart and Umasou live by the beach. Heart falls into the ocean and is saved by a friendly Elasmosaurus named Pero Pero. Heart saves Pero Pero from a Tylosaurus. Pero Pero tells Heart that Egg Mountain, where Heart's family lives, is having a lot of volcanic activity. Heart and Umasou decide to go save Heart's family.

On their way, they meet Gonza again. Gonza wants revenge and fights Heart. Heart wins, and Gonza is badly hurt. Gonza tries to tell Umasou that Heart isn't his real father. Umasou says he already knows, but Heart is still his dad. This makes Heart very emotional. Gonza tries to apologize before he dies.

A Hero's Return

Heart reaches Light's herd. Light tells him their mother is at their old home in the forest. Heart scares the Maiasaura herd to make them move to safety. Then, Heart rushes to find his mother. She is so happy to see her lost son again.

Heart apologizes for leaving when he was young. He introduces Umasou to his mother and meets his new younger siblings. Light also joins them. The whole family starts to move away from the mountain. The volcano erupts, blasting the giant egg-shaped rock into the sky.

Baku appears from the volcanic dust. He wants to fight Heart for disobeying his exile. Heart accepts the duel to protect his family. Heart uses quick kicks, while Baku uses powerful Tyrannosaurus attacks. Heart bites Baku's neck, but Baku slams Heart to the ground, almost killing him. Heart's mother begs Baku to spare Heart, revealing she adopted him. Baku asks what she would do if Heart was starving. She says she would let him eat her. Baku thinks this is silly, explaining that meat-eaters need meat to survive. But he agrees that Heart wouldn't have survived without her. Baku spares Heart and his family. As Baku rests, he tells Heart to be strong and good, hinting that he might be Heart's father.

New Beginnings

After the eruption, Heart's mom asks him to live with them in their new home. But Heart says it's better for everyone to stay with their own kind. His mother agrees, but Heart also says he loved being her son. The family shares a loving goodbye. Heart and Umasou go on their own journey. The Maiasaura herd finds a new home. Baku returns to the plains, and Bekon welcomes him. The movie ends with Heart and Umasou watching the egg rock from Egg Mountain fly into outer space.
