Łukasz Piotr Piszczek (born 3 June 1985) is a famous Polish football player and manager. He played mostly as a right-back, which is a defensive position on the side of the field. He currently plays for III liga club Goczałkowice-Zdrój.
Piszczek started his senior career with Hertha Berlin in 2004. He was loaned to Ekstraklasa club Zagłębie Lubin until 2007. After returning to Hertha, he became a right-back. From 2010 to 2021, he played for the German club Borussia Dortmund. He played in 363 official matches for Dortmund. With them, he won two Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012. He also won three DFB-Pokal Cups and three DFL-Supercups. In 2013, he reached the 2013 UEFA Champions League Final.
Piszczek was also a member of the Poland national football team. He played his first game in 2007 and earned over 60 caps. He played in three UEFA European Championships and the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He announced his retirement from international football in 2018. However, he played one more farewell game in November 2019. In 2021, he returned to Goczałkowice-Zdrój, the club where he started as a junior. From 2024 to early 2025, he worked as an assistant manager for Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.

Club Career Highlights
Early Years and Youth Football
Łukasz Piszczek's father, Kazimierz, was a coach at the local football club Goczałkowice-Zdrój. He brought Łukasz to training sessions when he was about 7 or 8 years old.
Piszczek started his career as a striker, which is a player who scores goals. In 2001, he joined Gwarek Zabrze. There, he set many goal-scoring records at a young age. In 2003, he helped his team win the Polish youth championship. In 2004, he was the top scorer at the 2004 UEFA European Under-19 Championship.
Playing for Zagłębie Lubin
Hertha BSC noticed Piszczek's great performances and signed him in 2004. However, they immediately loaned him to Zagłębie Lubin. He played his first game on 16 October 2004. It was a big 7–0 win against GKS Katowice. In that game, he scored a goal and helped set up another.
With Zagłębie, he won the 2006–07 Ekstraklasa title. He mostly played as a left winger, but sometimes as a centre forward. He scored 11 goals in the 2006–07 season. This made him the league's third-best scorer that year.
Time at Hertha BSC

In late 2007, after three years with Zagłębie Lubin, Hertha BSC brought Piszczek back. He scored his first goal in the Bundesliga on 26 April 2008. This goal helped his team get a draw against Hannover 96.
Piszczek had some hip problems in the 2008–09 season, which needed surgery. He returned to playing in April 2009. At Hertha, he first played as an attacking midfielder or on the left wing. But in his second season, he started playing as a right-back. This happened after another player, Arne Friedrich, got injured. Piszczek kept this position in the 2009–10 season.
Success with Borussia Dortmund
On 19 May 2010, Piszczek joined Borussia Dortmund for free. He signed a contract until June 2013. In July 2011, he extended his contract until June 2016.
On 24 September 2011, he scored his first goal for Dortmund. It was a last-minute volley that won the game 2–1 against Mainz 05. In the 2012–13 season, Piszczek played in 11 out of 12 matches as Dortmund reached the 2013 UEFA Champions League Final. He played in the final against Bayern Munich, but Dortmund lost 2–1.
Piszczek signed several contract extensions with Dortmund. He extended his contract until 2018 in January 2016. Then again until 2019 in April 2017, and until 2020 in March 2018. He had thought about retiring in 2020. However, he signed another one-year contract extension in May 2020, staying until 2021.
Return to Hometown Club
In May 2021, Piszczek announced he was returning to his hometown club, LKS Goczałkowice-Zdrój. He had already started a branch of Borussia Dortmund's football academy there in 2019. He stopped playing professional football at the end of the 2023–24 season. He then joined Nuri Şahin's coaching team at Borussia Dortmund as an assistant. In February 2025, after Şahin left the club, Piszczek returned to LKS Goczałkowice-Zdrój.
International Career
Piszczek played his first game for the Poland national football team on 3 February 2007. It was a friendly match against Estonia. In June 2008, he was chosen for the UEFA Euro 2008 squad. He replaced an injured player, Jakub Błaszczykowski. Piszczek played one game in the tournament as a substitute against Germany. However, he got injured in training and could not play more.
In September 2011, a suspension that had been given to Piszczek was cancelled.
Piszczek was also chosen for the UEFA Euro 2012 squad. He played in all three group games for Poland. On 22 March 2013, Piszczek scored his first goal for the national team. It was in a 1–3 loss to Ukraine. Four days later, he scored again in a 5–0 win over San Marino.
Piszczek also played in UEFA Euro 2016. He played his 50th game for the national team in the quarter-final match against Portugal. Poland lost that game. He was also selected for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. After a disappointing performance by Poland, Piszczek announced he was retiring from international football.
In November 2019, Piszczek was called up for one last game for the national team. This was a special farewell match against Slovenia during the Euro 2020 qualifiers.
Coaching Career
Player-Manager at Goczałkowice-Zdrój
In March 2023, Piszczek became the player-manager of LKS Goczałkowice-Zdrój. This means he played for the team while also managing it. He won his first trophy as a manager on 3 April 2024. He led his club to victory in the Tychy Regional Polish Cup.
Assistant Coach at Borussia Dortmund
On 27 June 2024, Piszczek was announced as a new assistant manager for Borussia Dortmund. He joined the coaching staff of his former teammate Nuri Şahin. On 22 January 2025, he left the club when Şahin was dismissed.
Personal Life
Piszczek was born in Czechowice-Dziedzice, Poland. He grew up in Goczałkowice-Zdrój. His father, Kazimierz, was a coach at Goczałkowice-Zdrój and later became the club's vice-president. Łukasz's brothers, Marek and Adam, also played football.
Piszczek married Ewa Kryjom in June 2009. They have two daughters, Sara, born in 2011, and Nel, born in 2016.
On 7 September 2024, a special match was held by Borussia Dortmund to honor Piszczek and his teammate Jakub Błaszczykowski. They were celebrated for their important roles in the club's successful years between 2010 and 2015. The match was watched by over 81,000 fans at the Signal Iduna Park. Former club coach Jürgen Klopp was also there. The game ended with Błaszczykowski's team winning 5–4.
