Club Teams and Success
İlhan Mansız became well-known while playing for Beşiktaş J.K. in Istanbul, Turkey. He was a very important player for them. After his time at Beşiktaş, he moved to Japan to play for the Vissel Kobe football club.
After playing in Japan, he signed a contract with Hertha BSC in Germany. However, he got injured and could not play for their main team. His contract was cancelled because of a rule that said if his knee was injured again, they could let him go.
After this, İlhan signed a one-year contract with the Turkish club MKE Ankaragücü. He was slowly getting better from his injuries and helping Ankaragücü in the Turkish Super League.
Before the 2006–07 season, he decided to stop playing football. There were rumors in 2007 that he was training to come back. İlhan Mansız himself confirmed these rumors and said he would sign with Ankaragücü again. But this final attempt to return to football was stopped before the 2007–08 season, and he announced his retirement for good.
In July 2009, after having seven knee operations, he tried to make another comeback. He trained with a German second-division team, TSV 1860 Munich.
Playing for Turkey
İlhan played his first game for the Turkey national football team in October 2001. He came in as a substitute during a game against Moldova. He became a strong player for the national team because of his amazing 2001–02 season with Beşiktaş. During that season, he scored the most goals in the Süper Lig and helped his team finish third.
Golden Goal at the World Cup
One of the most famous goals of his career happened in the 2002 FIFA World Cup quarter-final match against Senegal. He came into the game as a substitute for Hakan Şükür. In the 94th minute, he scored a "golden goal". This special goal meant the game ended immediately, and Turkey won! This sent Turkey to the semi-finals, where they eventually finished in third place. This was also the last time the golden goal rule was used in a World Cup for extra-time matches.
In the game for third place, İlhan Mansız helped Hakan Şükür score the fastest goal ever in a World Cup final match. İlhan then scored two more goals for his team in that same game.
Famous Skill Moves
People also remember İlhan for his amazing "rainbow flick" move. He did this against the Brazilian defender Roberto Carlos during the 2002 World Cup semi-final game. It was one of the best skill moves shown in that World Cup.
Before the 2002 World Cup, Mansız was not very well-known around the world. Even though he showed incredible talent on the world stage, his health problems and age meant that big European clubs didn't seriously consider signing him. Mansız once said, "It is too late for me, I wish I had been discovered sooner in my career."
Coaching Career
On July 11, 2018, Beşiktaş J.K. announced that İlhan Mansız was appointed as an assistant coach for the club. He worked alongside Guti, who was also a former player for Beşiktaş. Mansız left his coaching job at Beşiktaş on February 6, 2019, because of health reasons.
Figure Skating Journey
İlhan Mansız started learning to skate when he was 33 years old. This is quite late for a figure skater! He competed on a Turkish TV show called Buzda Dans (Dancing on Ice). He was a pair skater with his partner, Oľga Beständigová, who is also his girlfriend.
After winning the show, Mansız announced a big goal: he wanted to represent Turkey at the 2014 Winter Olympics. He hoped to be the first athlete to compete in both the Football World Cup and the Winter Olympics since Aleksandar Shalamanov from Bulgaria.
Mansız and Beständigová competed for the first time at the 2013 Nebelhorn Trophy. This competition was also the last chance to qualify for the 2014 Olympics. They finished 19th and last in the pairs event, which meant they could not skate at the Olympic Games. However, they continued to compete together after that.
