Football Career Highlights
Playing for Clubs
İlhan Mansız became well-known while playing for Beşiktaş J.K. in Istanbul, Turkey. He was a top scorer for them. After his time in Turkey, he moved to Japan to play for Vissel Kobe.
His career was often affected by injuries, especially to his knee. He signed with Hertha BSC in Germany but could not play for the main team because of an injury. Later, he joined another Turkish club, Ankaragücü. He tried to make a comeback after a car accident in 2007, even training with a German team in 2009. However, his injuries eventually led him to retire from football.
Playing for Turkey's National Team
İlhan first played for the Turkish national team in 2001. He earned his spot because he had a fantastic season with Beşiktaş, where he was the top scorer in the Süper Lig.
His most famous moment came during the 2002 FIFA World Cup. In the quarter-final match against Senegal, he scored a "golden goal" in extra time. This special goal immediately ended the game and sent Turkey to the semi-finals! This was the last time a golden goal was used in a World Cup.
In the third-place match, İlhan helped his team win. He assisted Hakan Şükür for the fastest goal ever scored in a World Cup final match. İlhan then scored two more goals himself, helping Turkey secure third place.
He is also remembered for a cool trick called a "rainbow flick" against Brazilian defender Roberto Carlos during the 2002 World Cup semi-final. It was one of the best skill moves of the tournament.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, İlhan Mansız became an assistant coach for his former club, Beşiktaş J.K., in 2018. He worked alongside another famous former player, Guti. However, he left the coaching role in 2019 due to health reasons.
Life as a Figure Skater
İlhan Mansız started learning to figure skate when he was 33 years old, which is quite late for a professional skater! He took part in a Turkish TV show called Buzda Dans (Dancing on Ice) as a pair skater with his partner, Oľga Beständigová.
After winning the show, İlhan set a big goal: he wanted to represent Turkey at the 2014 Winter Olympics. He hoped to be one of the few athletes to compete in both the Football World Cup and the Winter Olympics.
İlhan and Oľga competed at the 2013 Nebelhorn Trophy, which was a chance to qualify for the Olympics. They finished 19th, which meant they didn't make it to the Olympic Games. Despite this, they continued to compete in figure skating.
